How to authenticate an old Cartier brooch?

I have an older small brooch marked Cartier in non-cursive letters on the leaf stem. It appears to be a well made piece at 8 grams with very clear sparkly little diamonds. It is marked 18k with a symbol next to it that I do not recognize. I cannot find a serial number. The brooch back has a double pin and one of the pins is broken, so I was thinking of sending it to Cartier for a repair estimate (even though I would prefer to convert this to a necklace anyway. I am posting some pics in hopes that someone with expertise might know if 1) all Cartier pieces have serial numbers 2) what the symbol next to the 18k is and 3) if sending to Cartier for repair will mean that Cartier will determine if this piece is Cartier.

The diamonds look dark in my photo but they are bright white and more sparkly than I could imagine even though they are single cuts. This is not a large brooch - just 1.5" or so. I would love to have it made into a necklace with the leaf laying on it's side.
