How much should I spend on an engagement diamond?

I didn't ask to be honest but I thought it was a bit strange that she described it as a H/I. Surely it'd say one or the other on the paperwork?

it might not have a lab report. or a less reputable lab may grade as H/I

My instinct is to stay clear of it. It's just too pricey for what it is...
