I've always prounced it cull-it and nobody has ever corrected me until a few weeks back when I went into a fancy jewelry store and the guy was super nice but then made sure to annunciate to me how he thought it should be said, which left me feeling a bit silly! lolTuckins1 said:I've always heard it pronounced "cull-it"
The dictionary actually has it as - kullet, so the above pronunciation is technically correct.

Thanks.

Is it like may-lay?? This is how I pronounce it in my head but not sure if this is correct or not when I say it aloud...

I thought it was "me-lee" lol...???
I"m trying to get up the courage to call this store right now but I can't pronounce the designers last name (well, I'm unsure) and I don't want to sound like an idiot.

Funny how so many people think they see a tiny hole in the bottom of their diamond instead of understanding that they are seeing the facet on the bottom of the pavilion.
We have all sorts of words that a difficult to know how to pronounce in the business. Nacre on cultured pearls is pronounced Neh-kur, but I've heard a few well qualified folks insist on calling it Nah-kur. I heard a sales person yesterday call Turquoise Tur-qwahz. It really sounded fancy and special.....Little details can make a difference with some people.

Q-let

Or perhaps the same answer: a culet is not the same as a cutlet. I've been pronouncing it "q-lay" with the emphasis on the second syllable, but I'm not sure why. I am a newly minted diamond lover and I haven't heard the term used in real life! Maybe if I bump this thread people will chime in with more opinions a few years later! My most embarrassing jewelry mispronunciation was when I told a SA that I wanted bead set melee, not "chanel" (like Coco Chanel) set (trying to sound all knowledgeable about pave). She didn't actually correct me, but when she said "channel set" a couple of times I figured it out
