How important is it that stud earrings match?

you are all so helpful!! I have a stud earring question (ok, a few questions). I have 2 diamonds that appear to be remnants of an older piece of jewelry that my MIL gave to me to “do whatever I want with”. These two little bezel set stones are so firey after just sitting in some dish soap. BUT, even though they are each about .25 points each, they are very different shapes.

One, truly round and the other, slightly oval/oblong. If I had them set in miligrain bezels, would it be obvious they aren’t pairs? Does it really even matter as long as they speak to me? Plus, I already have a pair of .50 ctw studs that I wear daily. Stupid to have 2 pairs of similar size studs? Maybe I should hold on to them as is until I know what I want 100%?

If any of you have been following my posts, I jumped into a 9 stone band being made and have about 10 single cuts from an old inherited locket to do whatever with. Any advice is so appreciated. Picture of existing bezels attached.

Thanks for reading through!!

Id have them removed from the setting and measured before stressing about a size difference.

Bezel settings can be decieving.

Will do. And if they are still as different as I think? It might be OK? My head will be between them

To avoid having two sets of near-identical studs, how about if you use a hexagon shaped prong in bezel setting. You'll have more luck cheating the eyes as the outer perimeter of the setting will be the same, just the inside diamonds a bit off. If you milgrain that inside area, viola.

Make a moi et toi ring?

Seriously, the only one that would be bothered by the size difference is the wearer. People, for the most part, won't be able to tell. Hair will cover it and heads are always moving. Putting myself in the poster's shoes, it would have bothered me years ago but now -not really.

Do you think that a bezel setting would be the right type of setting to sort of mask any differences? Thanks for your feedback!

I don't really see the point in having two pair of studs around the same size. Plus I think the sizes are too different. I'd make something else with them such as a pendant or drop earrings with the stones in the center of a larger setting.

Love the pendant idea. Again, if you are setting something to "mask' it you will not be happy in the end run as the size will always be different.

To be honest it would bother me only because of the different shapes. My earrings are 1.51 and 1.53 and that’s a small difference and they’re both round and very close in specs so that didn’t bother me. I even think that if one was larger than the difference in my earrings it wouldn’t bother me because they would both be round. I would put the oval in a pendant and get another round stone close in specs to your round one when funds permit.

I recently had a trilogy diamond ring made into earrings and a pendant.

All 3 diamonds were different sizes (didn’t notice in the ring setting)

.32pts .36pts and .39pts. I had the .39pts into the pendant and the other 2 into earrings. They’re all bezel set in platinum, and yes, I can see the difference in size when I hold them side by side, but in my ears, no, you can’t tell they’re slightly different.

Honestly, for me, paramount. I cannot stand when a pair of studs is different sizes, and different levels of cut.

...i say this as if I wear mine. But still. Anal-retentiveness, man.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas! So you think though, that the oval isn’t too small for a pendant? I guess I should also add that I am not exactly a petite person.

As someone who once wore a navy shoe and a black shoe to work AND didn’t notice until after lunch - you won’t even notice once in your ears and separated with a “head” inbetween.

I don’t think so..I have a .25 round center stone in my cushion shape ring. I wear it on my right hand stacked with other bands. If you add either gold like a bezel or halo it will appear larger. I happen to like a smaller diamond for a pendant. I’ll attach a pic of my ring with the .25 center stone. It appears bigger in the photo but it’s exactly .25. You can have it made into a ring or a pendant.

I love this bezel idea and I think that your stones can work really great with a similar setting. If you don’t have studs, I would absolutely use the diamonds and make a pair. Don’t forget that they won’t be next to one another so I doubt that anyone would see the difference. I know that I am not a pendant person and I would personally prefer to have a set of asymmetrical earrings vs a pendant or anything else really.

Edit: I saw that you already have studs in a similar size. Then maybe hold onto them and decide later what to do:)
