I am a newbie at this, and I would like some input as to what kind of stone I have, i.e. just what does all the measurements, % numbers, etc. mean? This stone was purchsed for $4995 and I''m hoping that wasn''t a mistake. Can anyone help me understand just what it is I have here????

.53 Marquise diamond
Size: 8.53x3.87x2.57
Total Depth: 66.4
Table: 54%
Crown Height: 14.7
Girdle: medium to thick
Polish: good
Symmetry: good
Culot: none
Color: D
Cut: IF

I would appreciate any help you might be able to give me. It does have a GIA cert.

I hope that is the price per carat... right

Otherwise, not much one can say about a marquize with numbers infront alone. Those present no issue, in absence of any way to tell light return from numbers. "Very Good" symmetry would have bee great, but this is ok as is. For some guidelines on marquize cut, you may want to look HERE

Hi! Thanks for your input. What does "light return" mean? How does one go about finding out what kind of light return a diamond has? I guess by your comment on price, that it was too high, huh? That's a real disappointment. But I would love to find out more about this stone, if possible. What kinds of things should/could I do? Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.

If you can't return it... well. There is a full side of the glass: the price might have been twice, but of a relatively small amount. Since you are not buying diamonds bulk

either gain or loss on such a purchase is more a matter of philosophy.

About light return... well. Most of the 'literature' would be a bout round diamond and some of the theoru woudl apply to fency cuts too, marq included. You may want to start with the video on http://www.preciousmetals.com.au/ (Garry's oeuvre) and follow up with the Ideal Scope tutorial there. On the same site, there is an explanation on how a virtual model of a marquize can help predict it's light return. I think these are fun reading and should not take more than one hour. Besides, it's all about diamonds - not a boring topic at all.

To make thigs sound less strange, you may want to look at a marquize being 'presented' with all the analysis of light return in place. Hree's one WWW
