Just from my limited time on this forum I''ve seen many a ring with stones purchased fro one source and a setting from another. Obvioulsy you weren''t presetn when te stone was set. Likewise, when you order a stone from out of state dealers how can you be totally sure you got what you ordered.

Call it paranioa, but is there a definitive way to be sure it''s the correct stone? I know the GCAL graded diamonds are laser etched, does the same hold true for the GIA diamonds?

I believe that GIA diamonds are laser etched with the GIA certificate number (mine is, anyway) - I would imagine that this might depend on how long ago the stone was graded. I would think that anything that was recently graded by GIA would be laser etched.

You can have a stone sent for an inscription, but it is not automatically done at GIA. I did not have any worries with my stones because I was dealing with vendors I have complete confidence in. I have trust in Good Old Gold, WhiteFlash, Pearlman''s, and Winfield''s, and I am sure most or all of the PS vendors would never take chance on damaging their reputations by switching a stone. In addition, others who make settings such as Leon Mege, Maytal Hannah, and Mark Morrell would be completely safe to send my stones to as well.

I don''t have any issues with the integrity of the vendors. One thing that worried me is that things happen and a stone might get mixed up with another.

You're right, they do, on rare occassions. So your worry is not totally without warrant. When I got my upgrade from GOG, I took it to an independant appraiser just to make sure I got what I ordered, not that I didn't trust them. You can go by the inclusion plot, diameter, etc. to help identify it.

Can somebody please tell me how I can go about checking my stone for this number (mine came with a GIA cert but not sure if the number is etched like bem3231''s)? Could I just go to a jewelry store and ask them to look for it for me? I''m also planning to change my ering''s setting and I''m just worried about getting my stone back

Hi MP,

I recently purchased two stones with AGS certificates. The vendor I purchased them from (a PS vendor!) inscribed them for free. For me, that gave the greatest peace of mind. However, if you have a certificate with the diamond''s specs including an inclusion plot, this will enable an appraiser to confirm that you have the same diamonds once they are set.

Hope that helps!

Is it true that you can have a stone inscribed with whatever you want, like a date or name, etc?

As far as I know, yes.
