Just got the idea by chatting with people who are expert at jewelry and thought it is nice to share here.
As the unit of weight, carat originated from the carob seed in Mediterranean area in the Europe. With pink blooming flowers, brown nuts bred on the pods and a weight about 15 cm, the plant can be produced into glue. The very special phenomenon of carob is that wherever it grows, the nuts it breed would be of the same weight. It was the nut that was used as the measure to determinate the weight of other objects in history, and gradually the measure became a unit of weight in a wide range, and nut was thus begun to be used as a method to weigh precious items and fine materials.
Not until the year of 1907, was carat settled as the unit of weight for gem and gold through several debates, and it is still in use today. It is legalized to weigh a diamond with carat in the world, but some relatively larger finished products such as chrysoberyl, aquamarine, tourmaline, emerald, ruby and sapphire take carat as a measure of weighing as well though they are become more and more rare. The price of a gem is gained by multiply its weight with the price per carat.
In 1914, the international standard weight of carat was settled as 200 mg. “Carat” in the ancient books are totally different from nowadays carat. One “ancient” carat is about 205.3 mg, when converted into metric carat, 1.0265 should be divided. While the value of carats in different ares are not all the same. One carat can be divided into 100 points, and we call those that are below 10 points small diamonds or loose diamonds.
