How big does a diamond have to be in order to look decent with a diamond halo around it? Of course, I know it depends on the size of the melee stones, but in order to keep a good ratio between the center stone & the halo what''s the minimum size of the center diamond? I am thinking pendant.....inspired by the famous Ritani one...

I just did this.......and I think you need a minimum of .75 to achieve that look. I ended up going with a .75 (5.9mm)

I had a .66 stone available, too.....but the proportions wouldn''t have looked right if you are trying to achieve a look that''s proportionally similar to the Ritani.

Here is a link to the thread.

I agree, I love Alj''s necklace. .75 is a great size for a pendant.

What size melee do you want for the halo? ALJ used very small one point diamonds to have her necklace made. If you wanted to use bigger melee you would need a larger center stone. Also how big do want the finished piece to be?

If anything, I''d want to go smaller for the center stone. Bigger of course would be great, but not in the budget right now :)

I recently tried on a halo pendant with a 0.50 ct center stone, and I really liked it. The melee were 1 pointers, and I think the proportions between center stone and halo were nice. Of course a larger center would look great, but I would not hesitate to make a halo pendant with a 0.50 ct.

I saw a 0.5 stone in a halo setting from Birks. It looked good, but it had an airline, which I heard can make a stone look bigger (not sure on that one). So I think 0.5 can work.

Okay, you got me there, Allycat. What''s an airline?

I''m guessing, but I think she means a space between the halo and the center stone....that is see-through or empty. Almost like the ring around Saturn.

Island, a suggestion. I went bezel set for my pendant, but I think that the "ratio" isn''t as pronounced when you go prong-set. If I were using a smaller stone, I''d likely go prong-set and that would minimize the emphasis on the sizes of the center/melee relationship. On the prong set, it blends more.

Take a look at the "mara and Al at Whiteflash" thread.....I have a close-up of both rings on my finger. you can see that the bezel sets off and defines the line around the melee.....the prong-set blends more. I think this might be the way to go with a smaller stone.

Yes, Saturn, that's what I mean

This is the pendent I saw with a 0.5 stone (I've seen the rings too). It's hard to tell from here, but there's a little empty air space between the diamond and the halo. It was really quite pretty. And didn't overwhelm the stone.

I did at one point seriously consider this setting with a 0.5 carat diamond (so I can tell you that it works) or I wouldn't have thought about buying it. The only thing that deterred me was their crazy a%$ prices.

Oh and I second what aljdewey said, that prong set makes it less obvious where stone/halo ends and meets. I had untold worries that my stone would be too small for the halo...blah, blah, blah, and honestly, it looks great, not a thing to worry about. I would have been comfortable going smaller for the center diamond.

Half carat would be nice for me too... even with larger stones around if these are pong set and the center overlaps them a bit - not pave like in the Ritani rings.

These below are about .6 cts (Fay''s, of course). The first setting contains 0.5 cts of pave of (most likely ) less than one point per stone - the ones around the main diamond look slightly smaller than the other. The other setting''s diamond accents are .3 cts total - or a bit more than 1 pt each.

I could not find one ring with exactly .5cts center. Hope these give some idea about the proportions of the ring.

Oups...

These were supposed to be scaled to show .6 and .5 centers side by side. The drawing is not quite there, but it proved to be such pooling teeth, I had to give up mid way.

Perhaps you might still find this useful.

My neighbor just had her 1/2ct round put into a Ritani-like halo setting and it looks awesome!

I think there was a PSer named Hopeful Heidi that had a 1/3ct put in a halo. To me that was a bit small.

Here''s the link to hopefulHeidi''s ring

she did a super job recycling and old engagment ring..
