how bad is it...what to do?

Not to rain on the recut parade (because recuts have worked out well for a lot of people in your situation) but not all diamonds are good candidates for recuts. Your diamond, with a feather and SI2 clarity, may not be a perfect candidate for a recut. Another thing to think about is, how would you feel if the diamond was damaged during the recut? Recuts are not without risks, as I am sure Brian Gavin will explain to you. Just something to consider if the diamond is sentimental to you. You may be better off setting this stone in a pendant and buying a nice diamond band as many have suggested.

I requested information about the recut process and I'm excited to here what can be done (if anything).

Thank you all for your advice. I very much appreciate all of it. From the time we bought my ring I've tried to focus on the true value of it... the man that came with it. He is a wonderful husband and a fantastic father and I would have married him with no ring at all. I'm proud of the life we've built together. We've had our ups and downs but always emerge stronger than before.

Whatever we decide to do with my diamond will be a mutual decision and it will be one we'll be happy with long term.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

HOLY CRAP!!!! I JUST REALIZED HE PROPOSED 5 YEARS AGO TODAY!!!!.... How is that for irony!?!?!?!? :appl:

Congrats on your proposal anniversary

I always ask DH to surprise me with flowers on ours. Last year he came home with a cactus from Home Depot saying that it was the one plant that might have a shot at surviving for more than a couple of days under my TLC... it lasted two weeks, so I'll give him that ::)

It looks like you're leaning toward a re-cut. I just wanted to chime in - my original e-ring was purchased when DH and I were both 19. So, um, not a PS super-ideal rock ;)) But it has tremendous sentimental value to me, and I am now upgrading its pendant setting from a plain 4-prong to a halo pendant setting. I did purchase a super-ideal RB upgraded e-ring a few years ago, and will probably upgrade that again before I'm done with the diamond (and will still be working on my ideal antique repro setting), but I kept my original diamond. At any rate, I like the look of a solitaire with my diamond 1/2 eternity band that I got for our 10th anniversary, so I'll keep that look, but I second the suggestions above regarding a larger diamond band (maybe something unique like Asschers). Lots of finger coverage, lots of bling, and it does say "married." I'd consider a pendant setting for your current stone, even if recut, and go for something new like a multi-stone band.

This is a very good caveat and one I meant to mention but did not.

Ditto Lula. Just something to keep in mind.
