HONEST HAIR COLOR SYTLE OPINIONS?

Okay so... I'm bored with my hair. I've never done anything (intentionally) exciting with my hair. And I'm not getting any younger.

SO do you think that this hair color treatment (peek a boo? Duo?) would look appropriate on a 32 year old professional woman? Or would I look ridiculous?

I just got my hair cut (5 inches off the bottom so it's now below my shoulders but not below my bra strap thankfully) and I have a color appointment in two weeks. I have long layers in my hair now.


My Colors would be DARK ON TOP (natural dark brown) and CARAMEL (Four shades lighter than my own) UNDERNEATH and at the TIPS:

I don''t like it.

It''s a really young look (IMHO), and especially would look weird with dark on top, where the sun tends to lighten your hair.

My other idea was to leave the dark brown natural on the bottom and do the caramel on top. But the thought of maintaining that was more than I could handle.

For reference. Here''s an example of dark on top, light on the bottom. But my hair is brown (not black) and the color underneath would be caramel (not blond).

I am voting no..just not crazy about it. I commonly refer to this as the marble-cake look (hope I don''t offend anyone..I am sure you could find a thing or two to poke fun at me about!

I like it alot on shorter hair (lots of layer going on) that hits slightly above shoulder length and shorter, and think it looks great (not too drastic in color like black and blond) but what you stated, carmel and brown and always wanted to do them myself and i''m almost 30

, but I don''t like it on longer length hair then it just looks more for teenage kids.

I think it looks kinda tacky. I''m younger and do all kinds of colors and styles to my hair, but I personally wouldn''t choose that as an option. Maybe with a really short do'' it would be ok, but not so much with the long hair.

against the advice of the much esteemed members that have responded. But I have to say I will think about it very long and hard before I do, now however.

I just wanted to do something a little wild for once. And I still do.

All over red was what I was originally going for, but red is A) really hard to get out if I''m not happy with it and B) well my mother and my aunt (arbitors of fashion) said that with my olive skin they really hated the idea so I scratched it.

Any suggestions of other ideas?

Well you''ve seen my hair so you know I love the two-toned look, but I tend to like the lighter hair on the top. I have seen the darker color on the bottom tips, where I thought it looked cool, but that was usually a hairstylist and they can get away with the more funky dos.

If I had your amazing gorgeous hair, and wanted a change, I would cut some more layers and put caramel highlights or reddish highlights throughout. As long as you don''t get a ton of highlights (AKA like mine) you should be able to go a while in between getting it done. My highlights are super blonde and I don''t even do it every month because they leave just enough of my natural color so my roots blend in as they grow.

I think if you did a darker colour on bottom and about a shade or 2 lighter on top it would look good to drastic a difference ie black/blonde to me looks *bleugh* (well no one I have seen has looked good) but you would also need the right cut to compliment the colour.

Yes it would look professional if done right and really if you hate it, it is just colour and you can get it done again.

*disclaimer* I am not overly attached to my hair and I colour/cut/change styles all the time you only live once have fun with it .

ETA: My hair is currently dark brown a few months ago it was dark/med blonde and next week sometime I think I am going aurburn/ginger - I say go for it Gypsy

But I think with my hair length it might look teenage and I don''t want that. I wear my hair up 90% of the time so I thought the two tone would just be so cool in a pony. But as you''ve seen my hair in person... I''m gonna consider the all over caramel highlights. It might be enough of a change to get me through.


Neatfreak... I love the "less offensive" comment-- hahaha. If I were 10 years younger (and still had my personality NOW, not my 22 year old personality) I''d do bright red and black. Black on top and a solid fringe of red at the bottom (bright red). Like my hair was on fire.

If you''re real comfortable w/your stylist, talk to her (him) about what colors would work w/your skin tone. My hair is auburn underneath and blonde on top..I think if there wasn''t a huge color difference (like black on top, blonde underneath), you could give it a whirl..maybe try color that washes out so if it''s a bust, you''re not stuck w/it? I''m not the best w/color-I just let my stylist play around. Plus, back in my 20''s I had really long blonde hair and for several years I dyed the underside black and gave myself a huge black streak in my bangs. My rocker chick days-woo hoo!

I am excited about this:

I think I like it! So this might just be the lighting but it appears her tips are a shade or two lighter than the top. It''s subtle but very pretty IMO! I say do it, just don''t be too drastic.

Ditto mia. Experiment with the cut, and spice it up with subtle highlights.

Lol-sorry you know I''m blunt. I think that Mia''s first suggestion though would be fabulous on you! More subtle and professional but still with a bit of a pop.

Another ''no'' vote for the marbled look, but I do like the colouring that Mia suggested with the pic.

Is it possible to try a colour "rinse" as a test; then, if you love it keep it until it''s washed out (a few shampoos?).

Another idea might be to try on different wigs and see the colouring that looks best on you.

Okay, not to pile on, but...I don''t like it either! I call that kind of hair color "hairdresser hair" and I am not a fan! I do like the photo of Ashlee Simpson''s hair, though-that''s a totally cute cut and the color is subtle enough that it doesn''t look like hairdresser hair!

Okay so I realize I have given you 3 different opinions:

#1 Go for all over subtle hightlights for a color change and spice up the cut a bit

#2 First Pic- A few Chunks to fram the face

#3 Your plan, but keep it veeeery subtle


Of the 3 I really like #2 the best. Especially if you will wear it in a pony a lot!

P.S. can I come to the makeover?

Mia A SUBTLER gradation is a good idea too. I'm keeping the pics you've suggested and going to think about it for a while.

Isaky the wig shop is a great idea. Actually one of the other hairdressers had the MOST amazing hair, and it was a wig so she told me where to go to try on some. I think I may do that just to see what I think I can handle on myself.

I did talk to my hair dresser today and she's really good, but she's careful. She knows I'm torn between being a chicken (getting very finely woven carmel tones in my hair) and going complertely crazy (BRIGHT red and punk) so I don't know if she knew what to say. And she gave me a list of options and told me that we would do a nice consult before we do ANYTHING. When I jumped on the 'peek a boo' she said she wouldn't do anything more than caramel in terms of drastic.

MIA of course you can! It's on a Friday though, if you can make it, you are MORE than welcome!
