Some of you know I’ve been on a hunt for a yellow diamond ring, this has been quite the undertaking a couple of reasons. First (like most PS’ers) I am particular, in this case I’m looking for a certain color of yellow, then I am cheap and well, any diamond with “fancy” before the color is big bucks. I did put an offer in on a ring that I found that is my size with a yellow diamond in a brilliant cut but the seller didn’t respond and the offer expired. Then I happened upon this listing. Now, it’s obvious that the person we are working with here is probably older and is really trying, but this just meant as a light-hearted thread.

During the hunt, I found a listing that was not very descriptive but there is a return policy and he has good feedback, one problem, really bad pictures. Ever the optimist, I asked DH to write and ask for clearer pictures. We were thrilled when he got back right away so here is where we started:

And here are the clearer pictures:

Okay, so we realized that the flash was a problem so we thanked him for the pictures and asked if he could take a picture without the flash. He messaged back asking how to turn the flash off of an IPhone, so DH went through the steps and then sent him a message. He messaged back saying that he took some pictures without the flash but has to get them from the cloud onto his computer and he was going out to have dinner with friends and would get back to us tomorrow (today).

We were walking out of Mohegan Sun casino for Terrificon (CT’s version of Comi-Con) and he looks at his phone and tells me that he got the message with the better pictures without the flash:

The really frustrating thing is these ARE better but of course you still can’t determine anything. Is there a bow tie in the middle? Could there be a giant feather? The description is equally as vague, no clarity, no mention of treatment or whether it has GIA paperwork. Gah! So frustrating!!

I‘ve given up at this point, I could take a
chance on it since it has a return policy but I’m disenchanted. So much so that I’ve ordered a CZ in an old mine cut in the (hopefully) exact shade of yellow I want. No worries about clarity or treatment and cheap!

Now I know I can’t be the only one out there who has had this experience so please share your own funny jewelry adventure story.

At this point I would be so curious to see what the ring looked like I would probably order it if he has a return policy haha! Maybe that’s his ploy lol.

Ah maybe you’re on to something. I’ll be honest, I have considered it. I just don’t know what people think, they can obviously see how blurry their pictures are, so how are buyers supposed to work with that?

I would write back and say you have very nice nails- now take the picture so I can actually see the diamond.

@lovedogs, I can’t even believe I’m asking you to look at this and tell me anything BUT, do you think this has potential to be the color I’m aiming for? I ask because you determined in another thread what color yellow I’m looking for based off an inspiration pic.

This is literally the best photo that shows the color, according to the seller it is GiA certified but he lost the paperwork. Because it’s just par for the course with this guy

So, according to his description, it is a fancy yellow oval 3/4 of a carat and he says he paid $3500 for the ring from a local jeweler in NY, the setting is 18k. That’s all I got.

It does look lemon-y. It reminds me of a half-moon shape (again from the v blurred photo). If it is in your budget I think you should get it  .Plus inclusions aren't as important imho with fancies unless there are big black carbon spots.

ETA the band looks nice and solid too.

Can you write back to him, and very honestly but kindly say you are interested in seeing the ring in person, since his photos are hot garbage, and can he confirm the return process will be issue-free if you don't like it in person? Does he think the stone is laser inscribed, or was the report from before the laser days? Because if that's the case, then it has to be treated like a non-graded stone.

I agree with all of this

Well I’m totally done with him so if anyone else wants to take a chance, let me know and I’ll post the listing here.

He has a “make an offer“ on his listing, well I don’t care how great of a deal it is, if that button is there then I’m going to use it. Made an offer and he declined it and said he was firm on the price, when I told him that I made an offer because it was an option on his listing (and also because I will have to figure out how to get a GIA certificate since he lost the original) he said it absolutely was not, that he does not accept offers on his items :roll2:

So at this point, even if the ring was amazing, it wouldn’t be mind clean for me, buying jewelry should not be this aggravating. I am talking to David at Diamonds by Lauren, already I can tell my experience with them will be amazing.

EBay automatically makes listings have offers unless you toggle it off, and him being clueless about tech makes me think that’s what happened. Still, it’s annoying he got defensive and could mean problems if you did want to return! Good idea to go with DBL - David is great.

@Mreader ah, well that makes sense. Yeah, I don’t want to take the chance on having any problems with a return (plus I hate returning things to begin with) so this is the better route I think.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and we’d go to tourist attractions there would always be a brown paper “grab bag” for $1 that could contain anything. The thrill of the mystery of those brown lunch bags was too much to resist. Maybe I should make an offer for this ring for $1 :D

@kgizo usually I’m a risk taker, but I’m looking for something rather specific so looking to get this right. He really lost me when he didn’t even check the listing after I told him there was the option to make an offer :wall:

It would be great if someone bought it and came back and shared the result!

The fact that you could send an offer should have clued him in that his listing is set for offers lol

Right? Like dude, I am not making this up! DH wanted to screenshot the listing and send it to him but I told him there was no point.

it’s not everyday you come across a fancy yellow IF!

@DAF Yeah I got that and I was like :oops2: I would be afraid to wear it, one chip and there goes the IF clarity. Don’t get me wrong, IF in ANY diamond is amazing but overkill for me.

Thanks so much @ac117, I have seen that and it’s really pretty, love the three stone look.
