Hi,


I've narrowed down my search to the following 2 diamonds. Both fared well with the HCA test, scoring in the 1.7-1.8 range.


1) GIA 2287254241

- Triple Excellent

- 1.51 carat

- F color

- VS2

- Faint fluorescence


2) GIA 2288993491

- Triple Excellent

- 1.52 carat

- F color

- VS2

- None fluorescence


If you are able to compare the actual GIA reports, all the individual measures (except table depth) on the first diamond fall within the ideal range whereas the second one is a bit all over the place. My question is whether I should be prioritizing the better individual measures despite the faint fluorescence found on the first one or avoid faint fluorescence at all costs. I’ve seen both in person and they both look equally great. The first diamond is also cheaper by around 3-5%.


Any insight is appreciated.

the first one would be my choice. the faint fluoro isn't an issue unless you absolutely hate fluoro. But it's not going to be glowing blue in the sun or under lights or anything if that's what you're worried about. the second stone is just too deep.

Although both diamond have VS2 clarity, #2 has better clarity chart!
The smaller table and higher crown gives better profile view of the diamond.
I'm not a fan of fluorescence in white color diamonds.

Thanks @EvaEvans. I didn't realize you had access to the clarity charts! I agree #1 has more than a few twinning wisps in its chart, whereas #2 has 3 distinct feather patterns around the edge of the girdle that appear in both the top and bottom mirror images provided in the chart. However, both sets of inclusions were not easily noticeable when viewed in person. I follow your second and third points and recognize there might be some subjectivity in assessing these 2 factors. Thanks again for your input.

Thank you for providing the details of the two diamonds you are considering for your engagement ring. Hopefully the very knowledgeable crowd here at Pricescope can solve your queries and help you find the perfect diamond.

Roughly 30% of diamonds fluoresce to some degree. I’d agree that diamonds between D-F may sell for less as fluorescence is perceived as a value-reducer. In context, though, the visible effect of faint to medium fluorescence is usually only perceivable to a gemologist using UV light. Or, if you frequent dance clubs using black light you may detect a glow. Essentially I am saying with little to no impact on the diamond’s appearance it doesn’t have to be the deciding factor.

Alongside the HCA score, I would also ask the vendor to supply you with the ASET images so you can compare the basic light return of both diamonds. Those basics are the foundation for brilliance, fire and scintillation, which are the most important beauty components in the eyes of most people.
