Honestly, how do you KNOW Garry's store is significantly more expensive than online? If you haven't been there, and haven't read what Garry has written about it, I wouldn't tell someone its that much more expensive. There are many a retailer in the US who will match online prices. I'm sure Garry's prices are somewhat comparable to online prices + shipping + import duties. Without personally knowing, but knowing Garry's reputation and the philosophy of this messageboard (with him being a major contributor), I would venture to say that Precious Metals is one of the best places to buy in Australia.

I know you're not speaking negatively about it, and actually I have no experience with his store, but I just thought I'd note that many B&M's operate on a similar pricing schedule to online vendors. For example, NiceIce and GOG run store-fronts.

Umm, I think she's been there

If you are set on Lucidas( and my wife was and wanted to hear about nothing else) do a search and find some of the threads I posted on Lucidas (with prices).

The ideal Lucida will have a 38 degree crown angle (always) and about a 54 degree pav angle. Depth will vary from 65% to 73% and table size will be around 59% to 62%. Look on the Tiffany report at Tiffany for the precision of cut. If it is raed excellent you know you hit the mark for a Lucida.

I have been to PM a number of times, and I am actually getting my ring setting custom made there once I've chosen my stones. I have only good stuff to say about PM, and Garry knows that I found the service there to be impeccable and the staff very knowledgeable.

I said it's a "tad" pricier - and this is based on my research and my own experience. I had done a lot of research in local B&M's, and online merchants and found that the price difference is significant.

Personally, I agree wholeheartedly with you, being that PM is one of the best places to buy down under. Unfortunately, I have a budget to meet, and want to get the most bang for my buck - if money was no object, I will definitely buy from PM.

I'm sure vuster will be able to come to his own conclusion about the pricing between B&M & online merchants vs Tiffany & Co. I am just offering my opinions based on my own experience and if I come across the wrong way, I am terribly sorry.

Go and see Garry - he'll take care of ya

BUT, like Mara with her purses, and some guys with their cars, I know that certain brands mean a lot to certain people. It's not about logic.

Hey! I resemble that remark!

I know it's officially Saturday morning now but in Friday Tiffany spirit, I will say that just because I love some branded purses does not mean I spend my money foolishly amongst branded purses. There are some I wouldn't spend the money on and others I would...ones that I could classify as more practical or usable. I also wouldn't necessarily pay retail for a branded purse if I could find a better deal on an authentic item elsewhere. So there is some logic in my purse-loving madness (and diamond-loving!)...it may not necessarily be WORTH it if the purse is too expensive and/or not practical to use. You can see why I wouldn't spend $5k on a .35c stone for any amount of branding in the world!

BUT maybe if the .35c stone was on eBay and was authentic for $1000...it'd be worth it? Hmmm.
