Help with setting

Hello all,

People here were super helpful the last time I was dithering over a setting so I’ve come back for some more expert advice.

I’ve bought a tiny but exquisite little sapphire. It’s only 1.52ct but an unheated perfectly clean blue oval from Sri Lanka. 7 x 5.75mm.

I really want to do this stone justice but it’s so small it might perhaps need some help to stand out. I’m in two minds about whether to go for a couple of 0.75ct diamonds each side and make it a classic three stone or go for a halo. I fear a halo might drown the little fella whereas the side diamond approach makes him the star of the show.

If I do go for the three stone should I aim for oval diamonds - as the centre stone if oval - or rounds?

Inspiration required.

It's a pretty stone, thanks for sharing! :kiss2:

Personally, I would opt for a couple of round stones as side stones for a 3-stone ring myself.

A halo should work, however, I can appreciate your apprehension that it may overwhelm the main stone. How about an air gap/line halo? Here is my Tourmaline and EC diamond in air gap/line halo setting, the length of the main stones are not much over 7mm. My RH middle finger is about 10 US and wear my EC on that finger, and the ring size for my LH ring finger is 8.25 US for the green Tourmaline ring:

589753

Here are other settings that I believe would work, particularly the East-West setting as it would provide great finger coverage, IMHO:

Have fun deciding on your ring setting, and please post pics of your finished ring, thanks in advance.

DK :))

Three stone’s are always pretty.
I immediately think of @whitewave and @diamondhoarder
sapphire/diamond three stone rings that both are gorgeous.

But I really came here to say, I don’t agree halo/cluster will drown your lovely sapphire. It just depends on specifics.

(Plus I set my own 5.9mm sapphire amongst a cluster of 3.7mm diamonds and don’t think it gets lost. =)2 )

what a beautiful sapphire you've acquired!! its a gorgeous shade and hue of blue

i feel you can go either way with a white diamond surround or with a white diamond on each side of the sapphire. the idea is to create contrast, and i feel a cluster/halo or side stones of white diamonds will effectively achieve that fantastic contrast.

for a three stone, i feel you are not limited to ovals. you can do step cut sides, or round briliants, or old euro cut, or old mine, rose cut etc... have you determined if you want an antique old style look or a more contemporary/modern look?? by determining that, it might able help you narrow down side stones.

for a white diamond cluster/halo surround. you could go with round brilliants, single cut, oec, old mine, rose cut, again, same question as above ... what sort of look are you going for? old style or modern??

hope that helps

Ooh that east west setting is so lovely! But I worry that a bezel covers part of the stone - even if it’s a fraction - maybe making it look smaller.

I like the idea of a traditional / antique feel to it. It would make a lovely classic engagement ring. I’d love to set it with a pair of old Europeans but I live in Dubai and there is nothing old here at all - you don’t even see old people!

These are a couple of inspo pics. When I get the stone in hand and balance it on my fingers I might get a better steer as to what will work.

are you unable to have diamonds shipped to you??

i love the first image of the cluster ring. those white diamonds are round brilliants. old styling with modern diamonds. that could work ... i like an old cut surround. so, im completely biased and not very objective.

i like the image of the second ring, as well. less labor involved with that setting

I probably could get them shipped but it’s likely to be so much more expensive. Diamonds in Dubai are 30% cheaper than U.K. or US for example. I’m talking retail not trade prices.

If I could travel and rummage like pre-Covid it would be such a lovely project to trawl some of the pawn and second hand jewellery stores in England for something I could pull apart or customise.

Think I’ve found it. I will use this vintage Victorian setting as inspiration. 4677E717-3C45-49E8-A336-CD292435FC1A.jpeg 253532C8-0DDF-479A-8F85-D6D8EB17B049.jpeg AF76A440-69DC-4EDA-A8A1-8D33A411D993.jpeg

Love the platinum claws set on the gold band.

Will post pictures when it’s done!
