Help with ring found metal detecting.

Hi all,
Can anybody tell me more about the stone in this ring?
Its stamped 9ct and weighs 9 grams, I'm guessing its fairly old as it was about ten cm down and the stamp is very worn.

I suspect it is red colored glass.
Good quality stones are not usually used in low karat gold.
If this was a ruby or even a garnet, I would expect it to be in 18k, and a heavier weight setting.

Garnets are not expensive...so it is probably a garnet since set in 9k gold. Glass would not be set in gold IMO.
