Hi everyone! I purchased a beautiful 2.4 ct cushion and want to set it in a very delicate halo. What size melee should I ask for in the halo? For reference, I love CushBall's halo, https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-new-cushion-micropave.104301/,,,,, and LightningBug's halo, https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/pictures-of-my-cushion-halo-and-a-question.136387/,,,,, and DCDiamondgirl's halo, https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/drumroll-please-lm-cushion-halo-has-finally-arrived.153676/.....

Do you think those halos have half pointers? One pointers?

I want the halo to be a shimmer around the edges of the stone, if that makes sense. I was also thinking of asking for the halo to be tilted down 30 degrees, and I was wondering if anyone with half pointers has that in their halo.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Looking very briefly at your threads you linked too (by the way you need to take the commas out so they are clickable otherwise it just takes you the PS homepage) the 3 halos are all a little different. Cushball's is probably the closest in size to yours vs the others which are closer to the 1.5ctw marker.

Are you working with a PS vendor on this halo? If you are working with one of the experts I wouldn't dicatate what you size you want the halo to be. They have done this setting 100's of times and will do the proportions correctly. VC and SK have the best version in my opinion and if you need a less expensive version (not knowing your budget at all) I would go with ERD.

If you are going with a local person I would see what they also recommend? Then see their pave in person. I think lots of jewelers say they can do pave, but most don't do it well.

I will do the tilt angle at 25 degrees not 30.

It would help if you posted pictures of your cushion with the mm. Cushions are very different in their facet pattern as well as how the face up. Pending on that info it will be easy to say what size to use. Without that information I would say half pointers. If you want a subtle halo. If you use 1 pts I think the proportions will be way off. With a delicate halo less is more.

And for reference: Charmy's guide on How to Make a Harry Winston Inspired Halo Ring: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/cushion-101-my-experience-in-making-a-harry-winston-halo.183473/

that ASET looks familiar........ as in from a PS vendor.....

Have you started to request quotes on having the ring made? Once again if you go with a PS vendor they have done this ring many times before and will pick the proportions that best work for it. You won't need to dictate the details other then prehaps shank size if she has a preference or if you want a donut/ diamonds on the struts etc. This ring is pretty self explantatory for most vendors.

Thanks again to those who have commented so far!

I was just wondering what size melee would achieve the look that I'm aiming for, as I just want to make sure it is as delicate as possible. The ASET is from James Allen, which is where we purchased the diamond. We are definitely interested in getting a custom ring made.

All advice is appreciated, especially from those who have had custom halos made and can share what size melee was used in the halo!

For a delicate halo the general guideline according to Victor Canera (someone who would know), the melee size should be the width of the band / halo you desire minus about 0.2mm. For a 2.5ct cushion approx that is under 8mm I would do a halo that is 1.3mm based on my personal taste. Your vendor should be able to do a mock up of differnt halo sizes for a visual. I know for my 2ct and 5ct I was given an option of 1.5, 1.3 and 1.2mm I believe. Ultimately both times I went with VC's opinion for what would look best as this is his day job not mine. So worry less about melee size and more about mm width of halo.

Typically dimaonds in the halo are smaller and then diamonds in the shank are larger as most shanks don't go below 1.8mm for structural reason. And with all that info I'm now bowing out. You should really read Charmy's guide as well as just talk to the different vendors. Let them give you options and then seek opinions out here if you are unsure. Otherwise you go crazy over the details.

Take a look at mine. I have a 1.87 ct AVC and my halo is 1mm, half-pointers. My halo is about half the width of my band. I wanted a very subtle, delicate halo.

I love it because the halo does not overshadow the center stone, it is just a sparkly frame that accents it.

Good luck!

Thanks Dougsgirl! Your ring is beautiful. Do you know what angle your halo is at?

Hello J28! As far as the size of the melee, I would let the bench decide what would look best... it also depends how delicate you would like the halo. For your stone, I think half-point single cuts would be TO. DIE. FOR. :cheeky:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think VC likes to do about a 25 degree angle on the halo. Can't wait to see your ring!!! :appl:
