Well, I''m pretty late to the topic, but here''s what I would do:
1) Put the smaller diamond in a men''s band, bezel-set a la Stevensbride''s suggestion or tension-set like ASquareGuy''s ring. Because he''s in such a conservative field, I would not put the larger diamond in his ring. Based on your last few posts, this sounds like the direction you might be heading. A tension setting may appeal to his modern, artistic flair.
2) Set the OEC and 8 single cuts in a RHR for your wife (4 single cuts on either side of the OEC, if that makes sense). This will allow you to use all of the stones, and I think they would look great together in an antique-style setting.
