I''ve been reading and reading about the 4 Cs, and am getting more and more confused! I picked out a beautiful Verragio ring for my boyfriend to buy (he just wanted me to give him all the info so he could call in the order with his credit card), the ENG-0283 (here is a pic, but not getting it from this jeweler http://www.solomonbrothers.com/Jewelry_ENG-0283_96140).

I told my boyfriend it was up to him to pick the diamond, but it had to be at least a 1 carat princess cut.

Well, now the jeweler is giving him all these choices in diamonds, and he''s coming back to me! And all I know about diamonds is what I''ve read online, I don''t really have much experience buying them either.

The one the jeweler is proposing is:
1.28 ct.
H color
VVS 1 clarity
EGL Certified
measurements 5.69 x 5.66 x 4.30 mm
Polish = Very Good
Symmety = Very Good

The price seems decent, $5994 for the diamond, $5300 for the band, but they''re giving him a deal for both for $9595.

However I''m concerned about the H color. As I understand, Verragio uses G colored diamonds in their semi mounts, so is the H colored center stone going to look yellow in comparison? I''ve heard that the bigger the stone the more you can see the color, and as well a platinum setting shows color more.

Can one of you experts please chime in? Is this a good diamond for this band, or am I going to be unhappy with the color? Should we keep looking?

Thanks so much!!!

Oh, and here is a picture of the diamond the jeweler just sent over (obviously not the band I''m getting). And it''s still hard to tell if the diamond is yellow-ish, or if it''s just the yellow gold band behind it.

Please, please, anyone with experience with H colored diamonds, please let me know if this diamond will be ok, or if I''m just going to be disappointed.

Thanks again!

My ering is H colored. It is very white and I am very pleased with the color. I call it mine, but the jeweler still has it.
I looked at all different "colors" and I am very happy with the H colored stone.
It all depends on how you see it.
Hope it works out for you,

As someone who is a bit color sensitive, my stone is an H and it''s very white. The difference between your H center and G sidestones will not be noticeable.

careful! look at the stone outside the gold setting. It may be set in gold to hide the EGL H rating yellow. Ive been starring at stones now for quite sometime and if I can tell you anything its EGL is not as good as the paper says. Use your best judgement and have the jeweler place two H rated stones next to each other 1 EGL and ! GIA/AGS...see if there is a difference. Also check the clarity grades....then you can move on from there. the great peeps on this site have a wealth of knowledge, more than I could ever point out!

Hi calivalley, welcome to PS - is the EGL report by EGL USA or EGL elsewhere? Look on the report and see if it says EGL USA, if not, please copy the report # - EGL elsewhere does not have a reputation for being reliable, so sometimes a 'good deal' isn't actually one. (you can thread search on EGL to get an idea - they can be two colors and clarities off so your H may actually be a J and the vvs1 may be an vs1 which is fine if you are ok with that and the price is in line with what it actually is and you don't overpay)

Also can you post the stats on the stone so we can check the cut for you? The cut is what will give you the sparkle.
