Looking for a 1ct+ asscher cut diamond engagement ring (yes, she specifically requested asscher). Looking to spend a max of $7k for the diamond and setting, but ideally more like $6500. Budgeting 2k for the setting, based on a few platinum settings I've looked at. I have done a good bit of reading on here and elsewhere on the general guidelines for asscher cuts. I still feel a bit lost with regard to how to determine the real quality & light performance of the piece given that GIA doesn't grade the cuts. For websites like blue nile and James allen, I don't see that they provide anything other than the GIA cert (unless you get a blue nile 'signature ideal' .. is that worth it??)

I am looking for any and all information you guys can give me about this!

Below are some I chose based on my limited knowledge. Input much appreciated!

Hi bizz,

Asschers are one of those fancy cuts that are a little more difficult to pick. You can not pick them by the numbers. You must
have images/asets (which eliminates BN).

Of the two you posted I prefer this one...

The 1 carat G (not sure if you know or meant to post the same stone twice) looks like it's going to have leakage just
under the inside perimeter of the table.

You can pick your top 3 stones from JA and if they are in New York area (close proximity) they can get asets for you. They
can also have a gemologist evaluate the 3 and tell you what they think of the stones. Dont request asets until you have
gotten feedback from PS (you dont want to waste them on stones we can tell are not going to be good preformers.)

I'll have a look at whats available and see if there are others worth considering.

Edit - can you post the setting you are thinking about? You know that asschers face up small for their size. Sometimes it's
better to spend more on the stone and less on the setting but without knowing the setting you've picked...cant really comment.

Here is my short list with the 1.06 H being my favorite. Get more opinions before request asets. I threw a G in there but it's cut
is not as nice as the others (IMO). I also eliminated any that were under 5.5mm size.

This has come up on some other threads and will certainly he sure to blow her socks off if she likes the halo look!! :D from what I've read, a reasonable offer is likely to be accepted so you won't exceed your budget!! I've been dying for someone to buy it so I could see some hand shots! ;)

Oh have mercy- that is a work of art- one stop shop, that would be my pick in a heartbeat! I would ask for milgrain, just my own preference. Great ring! Good luck.

Thanks so much for the help everyone. I'm totally new to this and its a bit overwhelming for an analyzer like myself!

That halo setting posted above looks beautiful to me, but I think the halo style may be almost too formal/elegant looking for her. I am leaning toward a platinum pave setting, particularly a twisted pave. Something like this : http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/platinum-pave-infinity-diamond-engagement-ring-item-9329 , although bluenile had one very similar I liked a little better. I am definitely open to suggestions.

Is it common to order the diamond loose and get the setting from somewhere else? Any downfalls of this? Aside from the additional time and money involved to have someone set it?

Any other tips to help me select or rule out potential candidates aside from the standard 4Cs , and generally accepted ranges for depth & table?

Yes - get thyself to Good Old Gold. Tell them what your budget is, and let them find a stunner for you. And they have so. many. settings. I'm positive if you show them pics of what you like they can find something in one of the lines they carry.
