Help with an uninspiring sapphire

Hello all.

I’m after some thoughts on what to do with this sapphire. It’s an unheated Ceylon teal colour, nice cut, but so dark it blacks out in every light except direct sun. It was a poor purchase and I was planning to exchange it for something I liked better when I next visit Sri Lanka and see the guy I bought it from.

But I’ve been wondering if perhaps I can salvage something from this and perhaps set it with a couple of the bluish green tourmaline asschers I have lying around to wear as a RHR with my half eternity.

Is it worth setting? If so should I go for the lighter or darker side stones? The lighter ones match the eternity but I think the darker ones complement the sapphire more.

And if I do set it, any thoughts on style? I was going to go with a simple white gold in a similar style to my half eternity because I feel the sapphire doesn’t “deserve” diamonds lavished on it. :)

Any ideas welcome.

What about an ombré pendant with a light asscher first, then the medium tone one with the sapphire on the bottom?

I prefer how it looks with the lighter stones than the darker, and it’ll match your eternity better as you said.

I would probably go for a 14kt (or lower) WG setting, and while I would love to add diamonds I can see why you don’t want to spend the money. But perhaps moissy melee? I think a halo of sparkly white stones around your sapphire with your lighter blue sides would look lovely. It’s not a great sapphire for sure but I do like the inkyness. It’ll depend on how much your setting would cost tbh.

Examples of similar stones are often set in yellow gold - which I think if you’re do have to set it- would be a more flattering color. You look at designers like anueva jewelry people and they’re going in yellow gold.

It's quite clear that you don't really like the sapphire, so since you mentioned that you can exchange it I'd think that it's better to do so. If you don't like it, setting it would be a waste of money and also the sidestones that you set it with.

I'd sell it on loupetroop or wait to exchange it and cut my losses. I don't think it is worth investing more money. I feel like having it on your hand will make you more conscious of not loving it.

I guess you’re right. I don’t love the stone. But I do like the idea of having something that complements an existing piece. Because I’m obsessed with sets that match.

I also have just bought a work suit that would go with this very well.

I might sit on it a while longer and see.

I’d exchange it or halo it and somehow put two of the asschers in there somewhere? A halo might give it some life.

But exchange it would be my first choice.

I would let it go, unless you have someone in your life who loves dark stones. There are people who do love them- my DD being one-which is why I'm holding onto a dark teal and dark maroon spinel for her to use someday. :praise:

If I were in your position, I'd show my loose stones to people until I find someone who likes it. Then I'd set it into something for them. This is typically what I've done with stones I don't care to keep in my own collection.

If you can sell it or trade in, then do that. I don't have the time to spend trying to get money back that way.

Ok - I’m an outlier. I like the lighter side stones and making a set with your other ring.

I think it’s pretty

So I thought I might update in this stone.

Eventually I did decide to set it, but rather than try to make something of the teal colour I thought I’d just embrace it’s blackness. I stuck it in a semi-mount which is haloed so it is now BLACK u less in bright sun. This means I actually wear it with my black suits for work and my LBDs!

Do I love the stone alone, nope. But I actually really love the ring it made!

Its made a really beautuful and useful ring
I love your mindset
the teal colour is like a secrete only you know to look for

I agree with the majority, exchange it for something else. If you set it, you'll be spending on a deeply saturated sapphire that will not brighten up no matter what you add next to it.
