I am seeking a delicate 6-prong setting in Yellow Gold, with a very thin band, thin prongs/basket, and set as close to the finger as possible. Something like this (for scale reference, the stone pictured is approx 1.5ct):

Unfortunately, I was quoted $2600-$2800 for the setting alone, which is more than I would like to spend... I work in public education so every dollar counts!

Here are my questions:

1) Do you know of any settings similar to the one pictured above? Or any jewelers that could make something similar? I've been scouring the internet without much luck...

2) What is the price range one can expect to pay for a basic 6-prong solitaire setting? (for setting alone)

Thank you so much for any information you can provide!!

For comparison purposes: Rings like the Vatche U113 or James Allen's 6 Prong Knife Edge Solitaire are set too high for my taste, with band/prongs too thick.

Thanks for that tip. I wasn't familiar with Stuller - love getting a new lead and am enjoying poking around the site.

I believe the shank on the setting I like is closer to 1.5mm in width. Would prefer something equally dainty...

Caysie Van Bebber’s Jovyn might suit you? She does completely custom - however you like

David Klass is another one that could make a custom ring for you and his prices are very reasonable.

Thank you, lalala. I will contact David. I'm loving all these suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

Check out loupe troop for gently used mounts. I believe there was a CVB solitaire listed recently.

Maybe ask Ilya at Ivy and Rose for a quote?

I'm sorry what is the budget?
I may have missed that.

You guys are the best! I'm always blown away by how generous everyone is with their knowledge.

@Niel - We haven't set a budget, yet, but from my cursory research, $2800 is more than I'm willing to spend.

Thank you @Lookinagain for the Old World Diamonds suggestion. Those settings are beautiful. Great lead.

Thank you @whitewave for the Ivy and Rose suggestion. I had never heard of them and will be following up.

@tyty333 the Jovyn is definitely a contender. Thanks for mentioning.

Also, If anyone has a guestimated price range for what I can expect to pay for a 6 prong solitaire setting like this, I'm all ears.

I'm not an experienced jewelry purchaser and I'm still determining what I can reasonably expect to pay. Once I've done a bit more research into the price range for 6 prong solitaires at various jewelers, I'm going to use that information to determine the budget.

For reference-my jeweler would charge me $400 for a 14k band. Try yelp for local jeweler reviews and just have one made [well known designers will charge more because they can]. this is not an ornate setting.

Without a budget we can’t exactly suggest options. Stuller can provide ou a $300 option, but it won’t be near as delicate as the options from say, cvb or Leon mege. I assume you want the best for your budget. If so, we need to know that budget.

Thanks for your response, @Niel. I'm not trying to be difficult... We haven't talked budget yet. My boyfriend needs help picking something out. I'm doing research and I plan to give him a few options I like OR point him in one direction if there is a clear winner in terms of meeting my criteria and value.

I hope we can swing getting the craftsmanship of CVB, etc. However, I'm open to doing something stock like Stuller if it's a good value that meets all my criteria. With stock options, finding something that's set super low is proving to be the hardest part.

There are several moving pieces.
HIGH PRIORITY: Meeting my criteria - yellow gold band, 6 prongs in platinum (or white gold), band 2mm or thinner, set super low
HIGH PRIORITY: Value
MID PRIORITY: Delicate Craftsmanship
NOT A PRIORITY: Brand

I am looking for a good value, as determined by the price and the delicacy of craftsmanship. The inspiration setting I posted above is my ideally crafted piece, but it isn't well priced, so it isn't a good value.

To find a good value, I am searching for options that are delicate/ideal for a better price point, OR stock/basic options that are cheaper.

My questions are me trying to get educated so I can help my boyfriend make an informed decision.

When you say $400 for a 14k band, do you mean a plain wedding band? Or a 14k solitaire engagement ring setting? Thanks for clarifying.

That's a great point about well known designers charging more because they can. That's what my intuition was telling me, which is exactly why I came to y'all with my questions. I don't care about it being a well known designer... Are there any lists of good jewelers on here?

I still think DK is a great one to reach out to. He'll be less expensive than CVB and on par with quality.

Not always less expensive btw, but I second both recommendations!

My apologies. Just based off my personal experience. I received quotes from both recently and his quote was nearly half of CVB's! I'm sure it varies with each project;)2

No apologies needed! I would say that you experience is true probably most of the time, but I have had a few exceptions ;)

My setting is probably 1.8mm wide, it's very delicate. It's a custom Whiteflash setting based on their knife-edge setting. It was $1500 for customizing it in platinum for a ~3 carat round, I believe it would cost less for under 2 carats, certainly less for yellow gold. I believe they can set it low for you- mine was set at medium height per my request. I don't know though if they make settings without also supplying the diamond. Hope this helps you some

Brian Gavin doesn't require you get the stone from him. Whiteflash will set an outside stone if it's certified by GIA or EGL, insured, and you sign a release of liability.

@HappyNewLife Thank you for the Whiteflash suggestion, and also for letting me know what you paid when you customized one of their settings in platinum. It gives me a great data point on the price map because it's a 6 prong that was customized. SUPER helpful!

And thanks for throwing in the Brian Gavin suggestion, @arkieb1. Also, if your thumbnail is your cat, you have a beautiful feline!

The 18k yellow gold setting is $895 (less for wire price). Add about $250 for customization, and you're looking at $1145.

Sorry-I meant just the semi-mount. You would have to provide the stone.
