Hey all,

I've been lurking for a while. Just made an account so I could post. I'm hoping to propose to my girlfriend over the holidays, and thought you guys could assist. She prefers simple looking rings - round brilliant or old mine with simple gold (not white) band. Was hoping to buy second hand, to save some markup. I've been looking around for a while, but haven't really seen anything that caught my eye.

Found this today on "that auction site." Style seems like it is something she would love.

Info:
Age: 31
Location: Toronto, Canada (If you're price suggestions aren't in Canadian $, please specify currency)

Was hoping for some help in evaluating the reasonable sale price of an older European Cut stone (with GIA cert) with a Tacori Setting.

I figure the setting is worth about $1200 CAD
Diamond is pretty poor color, and not yellow enough to be fancy. My guess would be $3500 CAD
Am I way off base? Or would an offer along those lines be reasonable?

As an aside, does anyone know if there is any difficulty resizing simple (not paved) Tacori setting? I think she'd need a 5.75.

Thanks for your help,
Gman

Did you notice that this would be a final sale? I personally will not patronize an eBay vendor who refuses to accept returns & issue a refund -- unless the purchase is a sufficiently trifling amount that I won't mind that I can't get my money back if I'm unhappy with what I receive.

EEK! :eek2:
You could get yourself in a lot of trouble here.
Did she specifically say she'd be fine wearing an engagement ring for the rest of her life that was designed for and worn by some other woman?
Did she specifically say she'd be fine with a diamond with that much body color, GIA's "Q to R Range"?

Even if she's fine with both is she prepared for the possible reactions?
Her mother, sisters, friends, or co-workers may say, "Wow, it looks so yellow."?
or
"WHAT!?! He proposed to you with a USED diamond"? :nono:

She might be over-the-moon happy with everything about this ring and love the cost-savings, or she may be deeply hurt by you and/or the reactions of others.
Before considering this ring please ask her all these questions.
Then respect her answer without arguing or reasoning with her.
She gets to feel however she feels.

Personally, I'm a guy who totally understands your reasoning.
But if reading Pricescope for 12 years has taught me anything, it's this.
An engagement ring often has very different meaning to the bride and to the groom.
Mars and Venus, and all that. ;-)

There is also quite a difference in the look of a modern round and an old mine cut, it would be great if you could clarify exactly which she prefers! We can easily help you if we know the specifics.

I agree with Kenny, not everyone would like that ebay diamond or setting. And rose gold doesn’t suit every skin tone.

This setting cannot be resized.
This Old European diamond has very beautiful shape. It's very clean diamond too. The problem is the color, it's obviously yellow. But it's nice stone in my opinion.
I don't see any problem buying trough ebay, this diamond comes with GIA certificate, price is negotiable, you just have to be sure if you will like QR diamond color.

Diamond is pretty poor color,

This part of your message is troubling me. Why are you wanting to give her a diamond that is in your own opinion of poor color? Please reconsider, if that is what you meant.

I like the ring and I love OECs. I like this one too but I wouldn't buy it for an engagement ring without being certain that the wearer likes that colour both of gold and diamond.
If she likes yellow gold, she's not guaranteed to like rose gold. Also that ring is not simple looking - if she prefers a simple, classic solitaire, this may be too fancy for her. As it has diamonds and pierced metalwork in the shank, you will be restricted in how much you can size it or if you can size it at all.
Most people expect an engagement diamond to be white or an obvious fancy colour. As you've noted this is neither.
Have a talk with her about what her priorities are for the ring she will wear, hopefully for a long time.
If you would like this to be a complete surprise to her, enlist her mum, sisters or friends to find out for sure what she likes instead of guessing. You could also buy the diamond secondhand and set it into a new setting which is another way to reduce your costs.
Sometimes people hear "I want to save some money by going secondhand" as "I don't think you're worth spending a lot of money on" because advertising has trained us to equate spending a lot on someone as a way to show how much you love them. I'm not saying she will see it that way but she might or someone else might make the link for her so always be careful buying estate/vintage/secondhand unless you know that she is completely fine with it. She might appreciate that you're trying to maximise what you can get for her by going not-new. But don't assume that because you're looking at it as a purely economic equation that there aren't other aspects to it that you may not be aware of.
I should note here that I happily wear a secondhand, vintage ring that I found online so I'm not bagging on secondhand - it was the perfect way to achieve the size and style of ring and stone that I wanted - but it was something we discussed and were both happy with.
We're all pretty happy to help find diamonds/rings for people so post your budget and desired specs and style and I'm sure we'll be able to find something great. What you are looking at is pretty but unless she has seen it in person and declared she wants it over anything else, I do not think it's a good option.

I think it's very pretty. I'd get her directly involved though. If it's not her taste, come back with her desires and your firm budget. People here are awesome helping find stuff. God luck!!!!

Your assessment is about right. 3.5k cad for the stone and 1.2k cad for the setting.
With no return policy, shop elsewhere

Way overpriced for its color.

Good find flyingpig. So this is not a tacori ring OP; it is at best a cheap diamond that has been placed in a tacori setting.....at best. Would you like assistance to find a ring or diamond OP?
As an informational aside: so far as I know, Tacori itself does not supply any of the center stone diamonds in its engagement rings, so even an authentic Tacori ring will have a non-Tacori diamond set into the Tacori semi-mount. The center diamond is typically provided by the authorized Tacori retailer who places the order with Tacori for the ring's fabrication; Tacori is willing to fashion a semi-mount for a customer's own diamond or certain colored gems, but again, the order must be placed through an authorized Tacori retailer -- we consumers can only do business directly with Tacori by making a "fashion jewelry" purchase through Tacori.com
https://www.tacori.com/jewelry/

The base retail price for that particular Simply Tacori semi-mount (suitable for a 0.75 ct round center diamond) in 18K rose gold is $1990 CAD at today's exchange rate; don't know how much of an up-charge there is, if any, for larger center stones..

The eBay seller obviously purchased the diamond and had it set into a Tacori Mount. This is pretty normal I think. The price she is asking is too much giving the mount is now “second hand” and resizing will be either not possible or an added expense plus the small expense to repolish the ring. As others have said, the center diamond is nice enough but it’s not fantastically amazing and is very yellow in tone without being a “fancy yellow”. Some people really dislike that yellow tone so you need to make sure your intended is happy with such a low color. I think you could with PS help find a nicer, whiter diamond and a brand new, exactly to size and style setting for the same dollars from a reliable business vendor rather than a person selling a “used” engagement ring on eBay with no return policy.

I'd rather stick with a known vendor MyDiamondZone/IvyRoseVintage are the same seller on Ebay/Etsy. I think this link will show you the USD. Stick with their GIA graded diamonds. They are a brick and mortar store in Chicago and well-regarded here. Not who I'd recommend for a custom setting, but modifying their own settings, setting diamonds and such would be great. They don't have any yellow gold settings, but ask them. They have more stock than what is shown.
