Help please! Re-set ering or buy new diamond?

Hi everyone,

I am new to the wonderful world of Pricescope and it's already been hugely inspiring and helpful so I'm hoping for some advice.

I have recently had my first baby and my lovely husband suggested some more bling to celebrate! Both my ering and wb use diamonds from a family brooch and there are a few more that we could use, however we have to leave half for my brother in law. Now these are small diamonds and not enough to create another stacking/eternity ring. So the options I think are to either re-set/re-design my ering or ask for a larger diamond.

My current diamond is small, only 0.39 ct H/I and Sl2. To be honest, I love my ering design and only crave a larger diamond but this hasn't been suggested by my husband and I think he would be upset if I asked for this, he is thinking along the lines of using what we already have.

So the question is, should I have that conversation or does anyone have ideas on how to re-design my ering to create a greator presence/finger coverage? The only thing I can think of is to create a halo out of the channel set diamonds and maybe use two of the largest diamonds from the brooch as side stones and then have a plain platinum band, may be increasing the width to 3mm to match my wb. For info the small diamonds measure 1.56mm and my centre stone measures 4.55mm - would this even work proportionally? All the gorgeous halo rings I've seen on here have substantial centre stones.

Oh and my ring size is 5 and I have tiny hands so wouldn't be looking for a massive diamond, plus finances are on the tight side as I'm on maternity leave. I'm also from the UK if that makes any difference :)

Any thoughts or ideas would be gratefully received! Hopefully I've attached the photos properly!

Have that conversation with him. Take it from someone who knows. I'm on mat leave too and I was terrified to have the discussion worrying I may hurt him or that I was being selfish. We picked my 0.70 diamond together - he didn't show me prices but had me choose between 0.70 and 1 carat, and though I wanted the bigger one I lied! Then years later I approached him about haloing my ring and he said the wedding band was most important- he didn't have any sentimental attachment to the ering and I can change setting or upgrade diamomd. Silly me went the setting route and though the halo does give presence and coverage, it still didn't deal with the fact I thought my diamond looked too small! So now we are talking about getting a bigger diamomd along with a new setting.

Be honest with him and you may be surprised. In my experience the halo didn't help - short term it was nice but in the long term, I should have just gotten a bigger diamond.

Forgot to add that I don't think it works proportionately. A fine halo looks best and when you have a smaller centre diamond, the halo would have to be very tiny. They added my halo which does match the band part (roughly 2 mm) but I feel it doesn't look right proportionately with the diamond. Mine is a 0.70 so yours will run into the same issue. It doesn't look bad, but I don't think it looks ideal either. Not the fault of my jeweller as I told them to match the halo width to my ring width. Hard to see but diamonds on band get smaller and taper towards the centre.

Thank you so much, I can see how re-setting may just prolong the inevitable. I really don't want to upset him but I guess honesty is the best policy. If I think about it objectively the only thing I would choose to do (if money was no object) would be to get a larger diamond. Not looking forward to having this chat though!

Oh thank you for the pic, that's what I was worried about that I need a larger stone anyway (if I was to use these small diamonds) to create a good looking halo.

I really appreciate the response, it's great to hear from someone who has experienced the same situation!

I dug these up for a different thread, then realized that they didn't fit that person's requirement. Anyhow, my point was that you can put a bold halo around a smaller diamond, and there is historical precedent for it in the '60s Keepsake Diamond sets and the '80s channel set halos. These are pics that I have saved in my folder of "rings that caught my eye." The yg channel set ring has a 1ct center. The wedding set that has the smaller center diamond with an airline around it is about a .5ct.

These are pretty, thank you TC1987 I hadn't considered a halo like this. I especially like the last one and the fact there is a history to these styles. Food for thought!

I would talk to him.
Maybe you can do a three stone and use your current 39 pointer as a sidestone?

Past (your current stone), present (large stone) and future (another 39 pointer)

Thanks Gypsy, I agree I think I will have to talk to him. The three stone idea is lovely, although I don't think we could afford to buy two diamonds right now but it has a great sentiment. I'll have a look in to much we would have to spend to see if it's a possibility.
