I am going to purchase a diamond soon from a reputable dealer in the LA jewelry district and the specs are below.

diamond specs:
Princess cut diamond
1.60 carat size
H color
VS2 clarity
66% Table percentage
71.1% depth percentage
6.58x6.57x4.67 measurements
Thin-Thick girdle
VG polish
VG symmetry
GIA laser inscribed
obviously GIA certified

I just wanted to make sure for my own personal reasons I am getting what I am paying for and that it matches the certificate. I do trust the dealer and he only sells loose diamonds, but the type of person I am, I always want to verify it myself. can someone please let me know if my logic in checking the diamond at the time of purchase is good or give me some pointers.

1. compare the diamond to the calibration diamond set for the color on the certificate
2.take measurements of the diamond with a micrometer caliper to verify the dimensions match the certificate
3. If available have the diamond weighed on a micro balance scale to match carat size to the certificate
4. It is a VS2 diamond so it will be some what difficult to match, but match inclusions to the certificate
5. the diamond is or will be laser inscribed by the GIA, so look match the laser inscription with the certificate

This is my logic in verifying the diamond, if anyone could give me any other pointers that would be great.

Also I have these questions
-Do jewelers ussually have or can get scales for me to weigh the diamond?
-Do jewelers ussually have the calibration stone sets for me to compare the stone to?
-Is it difficult to laser inscribe a diamond? meaning could the seller laser inscribe a different diamond and give it to me instead of the actual diamond I purchased.

Tanks in advanced for any help

I know that princesses are a bit difficult to judge just from numbers. Do you have a way to see Idealscope and/or ASET images? Those would help you look at the light return and expected performance. What is the vendor''s return policy? Be sure to view the diamond in different light - every diamond looks great under jewelry store lights. Take it outside, cup your hands around it, look at it under diffused lighting. Does it still sparkle?

I''m sure others will have more advice for you, but I thought I''d throw out my ideas to get you going.

Hi Joey,

To add to Miss Erica's excellent advice, it might be a good idea to make the sale final on this diamond checking out to your satisfaction in all aspects ( get this in writing preferably) with an independant appraisal. This way they can give you an impartial expert opinion on your purchase, answer any questions you may have, verify the diamond and report match, colour and clarity are as stated etc and give you a suitable figure for insurance purposes. I think this might be worthwhile to give you reassurance and peace of mind with your purchase.

Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

Here is an article which describes the appraisal process and services.

Thank you for your input and yes I already called an appraiser to match the diamond after purchase and to give a value for insurance purposes. I just want to verify the diamond before I leave to make sure for myself that I won''t have to excersise any return policy. Thanks again
