is good old gold the only place to buy one from? I'm looking in the .7-.75 range (under $4k) and of the two they have this .72 one appears the best to me http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/7371/ what do you guys think about it? Is this as good as I'm going to get in this size or should I wait for them to get more in? July 17 is a special date for my gf and I so I was thinking I might propose then if I could get the ring in time. I just started learning about diamonds and this diamond was looking great to me until I noticed that the GIA report says the girdle is extremely thin - very thick. I have read that extremely thin means it might chip and I've read that slightly thick is as high as you should go ideally. Is this diamond's girdle okay or something I should be concerned about?

also I'm going with a regular solitare setting and I was wondering if I should get it from goodoldgold if I get the diamond from there or should I get it from a local jewelry store? I don't know if I trust local shops but I know they would keep polishing and rhodium plating the ring for me for free if I get it from them. The setting is only temporary until a few years down the road when I will let her pick her own setting. Thanks!

I think I would call GOG and ask them whether the E VS2 or the F Si1 is better, and ask them about the girdle. We use things like "avoid ex thin" as rules of thumb but the word of an experienced and trustworthy jeweler is always the final say. Me, I would probably opt for the F SI1 assuming it is totally eye clean, just for peace of mind.

It is best to get the setting from GOG. They will take responsibility for the diamond during setting whereas a local jeweler will not, and this matters when you are talking about a princess with those delicate corners. Damage during setting is rare but it can happen. ETA You can get your ring dipped and polished by any jeweler for little cost, and it is not all that fequent an activity anyways.

thanks for the help!

would there be a noticeable difference in the .72/.74 they have and a .80? Looking at the prices it looks like I could afford a .80 if its worth waiting for. Thanks!

Solasferas don''t appear in inventory as often as rounds, so there might not be a .80 coming in anytime soon. You could always call GOG and ask them, or just put the $$ towards the setting

Maybe a tiny difference in size if held side by side, we are talking maybe one tenth of a mm. I think when set and on its own you would never notice a difference.

they have several more in this size range available to them but they are all H color. What do you guys think about that? Originally I came up with a color of no less than G when I was making my wish list. Thanks!

have you seen diamond colors in person? I think H color should be fine but it''s a matter of personal preference

do solasfera princess cuts just have weird girdles or something? During my research it seemed that girdles in the thin to slightly thick range were the best. I read that too thin may make it easy to chip and I have seen thick girdles in person and I don't like the look of them. Many of the solasfera girdles seem to have a broad range like extremely thin to thick or very thick. Only one of the thirteen listed on GOG's site would fit the girdle criteria I originally came up with (its slightly thick throughout). Anybody have any expert advice about this? It looks like I'm obviously going to have to change my girdle size criteria if I want to buy a solasfera princess cut in the next couple months....

Thanks!!!

bump.....anybody have any info. about the solasfera princess cut girdles??? Has anybody seen the thick or very thick girldles in person and if so how did it look to you? Thanks!

I plan on eventually getting the diamond set in a ring with micropave by leon mege. What is the lowest I should go on the color rating?

These are the two possiblities I came up with for the setting that will be only temporary until my gf/fiance chooses exactly what she wants....is #2 even a possiblity is my question?

1. regular 14k white gold solitaire. no engraving or anything since it will not be used after my gf/fiance chooses the setting she wants.

2. get a regular 14k white gold solataire setting and engrave it w/ a special message and get 2 surprise stones inside the ring (our birthstones). when she chooses the setting she wants then we could have the head (i think that is what it is called) of the 1st setting shaved off or whatever so that its just a regular round band and my gf/fiance could wear this band when she is going somewhere she doesn't want to put her ering and wedding band at risk or get it dirty like on a beach vacation where we do a lot of fishing and swimming in the ocean and stuff. she gets to have a ring to wear when she doesn't want to mess hers up and the added benefit of it being special because it was her original ering. so my question is - is shaving off the head or whatever to make the ering setting into a regular band possible? Thanks!

When I get the ring I will post pics on here for everybody to see! Thanks!

if you guys were choosing between a 0.98 F and a 1.20 J that were the same price which would you choose? I have a feeling I should go with the .98 but the 1.20 is perfect except for the color so its tempting. The setting will be a thin micropave by Leon Mege. thanks!

And don't worry about my post above this one. GOG says the will put a head on an eternity band for me and it will be used temporarily for the engagement setting and then the head will be removed and it will be used as an alternate wedding band.

I personally would not do the J in the princess cut especially in a 1.20 ct size. The larger the stone, the more you notice the color and princess cuts show more color in the corners....which I learned the hard way. It's too bad they don't have something in between those two...I've been faced with the same dilemma...but between those two choices I would take the smaller F colored stone, especially if it's going to be set in pave.

good advice and what I figured. Thanks!

I think this is my final question guys. There are 2 solasfera princess cuts in my size range I am looking at. The length to width ratio of one is 1.027 and one is 1.026. My question is should I pick from one of these two or wait for GOG to get in one in my size range that has a ratio closer to 1.00? Thanks!!!!

I think anything between 1.04 is fine.

I totally agree.
Yes, both stones are less than 1.03, so are considered square. You won't be able to detect the difference between 1.026 and 1.027.

just found out that they can get one in that has a ratio of 1.005. Should I pick that one? I know I have have seen some people on here that were very picky about getting one that is perfectly square. thanks!

Is this a mind clean thing to you? You will never notice the difference between a ratio of 1.005 and a ratio of 1.027 in that size, it is a difference in the hundredths of mm! Do you know how thin that is? ::)

Yes they do have a varied girdle variation which can approach thick or very thick. Rhino says that it doesn't affect peformance I would tend to beleive him. However this is one of the reasons why they would not get get AGS 000 grading and are instead sent to GIA thast does not issue a cut grade. Solasfera's are not consistant in girdle variation or finish grade symmetry (which may br related). It would be nice to know from the Solasfera directly why such a precision high performance design has such variation.

if my gf wanted her engagement ring to be made with pink gold and pink diamonds for the melee could I go way down in color to get a bigger diamond? Thanks!

pink diamonds are not necessaily cheaper than white diamonds, so the setting price will be the same give or take some.

If you are asking if you can go down in color BECAUSE you will have yellow diamonds next to the main stone as opposed to white... well i think the pink might make a lower color diamond look more yellow. I could be wrong. There are pink halo pictures here if you do a search... I will look for examples..

Have you seen diamonds in person t oget a feel for your comfort with diamond colors?

*pink diamonds next to the main diamond.

In my opinion I would say with the pink you could go with a lower color. i think the "J" looks BEAUTIFUL. I will have a "G" with pink in a few weeks to post. But as of now I am just able to give my thoughts.

:D :D :D

I'm looking at the .98 solasfera princess. I can only find 2 small things wrong with it - it appears to have just slightly more light leakage than the other solasferas and its girdle goes up to very thick (I would prefer no more than slightly thick). Wondering if I should buy it or wait for one that is more perfect in my eyes? Jon says I'm suffering from analysis paralysis and I agree but I can't help it when I'm spending so much money on a little rock I want it to be perfect lol. Thanks guys!

The corner leakage is not significantly larger. Definitely something wonky in the girdle, as can be seen from the helium report but not something that is trying to increase weight, rather just a mistake in the cutting.

Up to your comfort level. If you have the time, you can wait but you might not get something better in the end and this one might be sold in the meantime.

So you will have to weigh what is more important to you.
