I have been searching for an emerald cut for about 2 months. I haven''t really been able to find that many websites which detail the "ideal" specs to look for.

So far I have found 4 stones I am considering.
http://www.whiteflash.com/emerald/Emerald-cut-diamond-519220.htm
http://www.whiteflash.com/emerald/Emerald-cut-diamond-640124.htm
http://www.whiteflash.com/emerald/Emerald-cut-diamond-604593.htm

and one from dirtcheapdiamonds.com
http://dirtcheapdiamonds.com/diamond_detail.cfm?did=2333964

Any help to find the "perfect" stone would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again!

I don't know enough about emeralds to help, but check out www.gemappraisers.com. They have a DIY cut advisor which can be helpful to figure out how to evaluate fancy cuts.

Thanks-that is a great resource. Any idea how to calculate the crown %?

Also, if anyone has any opinions on the diamonds I have selected-let me know.

I just realized that the dirtcheapdiamonds.com diamond is rather square-and my gf definately wants a rectangular stone.

I recently bought a large stone from Whiteflash(See Show Me the Ring). I found that dealing with them by phone was best. They also respond quickly to email.
Lesley found me a beautiful stone that was not in their inventory. She had it sent to them. Brian, who is the ACA diamond cutter, discussed the stone at length with me on the phone. If you have not called them, it might be worthwhile to do so. I found Brian to be very friendly and honest. I wound up with a stone that was well below my budget. The independent appraiser also felt it was a beautiful stone and met all expectations.
If you speak with Brian or Lesley, they can discuss with you the advantages of each stone. They had several more expensive stones on their site in the size I wanted and were within my budget. But I went with Brian's advice and am very pleased with the stone and the custom made setting they had made to accommodate my stone.

I am sure there are other vendors on this site who do not drop ship and will also be helpful in discussing each stone you are considering, sending Sarins and giving important information on each stone. Good luck.

You would need to ask about the respective pavilion angle - it cannot be read / guessed from teh stats on GIA reports. However, it would help even better to have some test of light return on these stones. The AGA grades do not account for brilliance (as you can find explained on the site and under the Fancy shapes tutorial here) and it definitely is imporatt, Ec or no EC - well, as far as I understand these things.

below are lines up the stats of the four stones. One of the pieces at WF is the same as the one listed by DCD... so there are just three contenders after all.

The proportions of all stones are very nice, as far as numbers go - unfortunatelym this does nto mean going too far ! I like to see depth below 70% (so not too much weight goes unseen) and smaller tables (just my preference here)... and these stones have it. But may I ask, why VVS-IF ? Unless you want perfection on paper, these make little practical sense. Not that there is anything wrong, but it may be good to take into account VS-s for the sake of their proportions and shape as well. it can't hurt

The DCD one is definitely squareish - I like that, in fact - but this is not supposed to be my choice. If anything, I would choose based on shape and light return (a piece of info that is missing and either seller, I believe, could provide once a stone is selected)... BTW. Sarin is not going to help guessing brilliance for these (non round) stones. You would need a direct test (such as Idela Scope pictures) for thst. Both WF and DCD provide such tests with their rounds, so it should be feasible for yours.

Wow! Thanks for the info. May I ask how you got the image of the length/width?

As far as VVS and IF-I want a REALLY clean emerald. I have looked at SI2 and I's and I find that I obsess over the inclusions.

So it sounds like the best course of action is to call the vendors and ask to see some idela scope images.

Thanks for pointing out the duplicates in my "potentials
Thanks
Jonathan

As for some definitely rectangular stones (that means min. 1.4-1.5 L/w to me)... how about:

This E-VS1 (1.44 L/W) DCD ?

(although not tat close to the specs you are looking for). And one at GoodOldGold (LINK) if you wandered just how much one can know about a stone without touching it!

The "Signature Collection" at Blue Nile contains some nice pieces (with all numbers in place to obtain AGA grades for them). Here's one option (LINK) listed there...

I would definitely not jump to any conclusions about an EC without at least good pictures to go by!

I definitely understand... but VS2 is usually considered perfectly safe as lowest threshold from that point of view - from VVS to SI2 it's a long way

I would definitely consider the look of the stone more important than the "paper grade" (and this is really what VVS is only good for!).

I didn't dare jump from your IF to an SI1, but just about the most brilliant EC listed (with all analysis in place that is) around here is an F-SI1 at Good Old Gold. I do not know if that stone would be clean enough for you, but it nearly tops the scale for light return - definitely something worth notocing for a cut that is not usually known for top brilliance

The pictures with proportiosn come from gemappraisers.com (their "fancy shape selector" application).

Hope this helps

I just got off the phone with Bob at whiteflash and he also was recommending the E Vs1, 1.73- He said it was a 1A. It seems to be available at both WhiteFlash and DCD.

The GOG link you sent taught me that I need a diamond with a l/w ratio or about 1.4. I think 1.3 would look rather square.

What database do these dealers use where they all have access to the same stones?

I can't thank you enough for all your help...

I purchased a 1.11 ct. emerald cut in March from Whiteflash. If your girlfriend prefers a more rectangular look (as do I) I would go for as close to 1.5 to one or above as possible. I used the charts and I made sure that I got the crown height percentage information. I chose to look at 4 stones via an appraiser using three different vendors. It is very important to see fancy cut diamonds in person. Stones can be sent directly to an appraiser before you have to expend any of your funds. When you make your selection, you charge or wire the funds and then the diamond you select can be released to you by the appraiser.

Enjoy your search!

The 1.44:1 looks rather close to the "target" of 1.5:1 (named most often to define the typical Ec)... Would it work to get a picture from WF ? These 2D drawings help, but somewhat exaggerate the slight difference of proportiosn between 3D "objects".

You should check out the inventory at the diamond exchange (I think the site is www.diamondexchange.com). we just bought am emerald cut stone from them and they had great customer service! we went through a person named Michael and although he was in Toronto, I believe they are international brokers so you can order from anywhere. We had the diamond appraised once we received it (they had also sent 2 separate appraisals) and it was pretty much exactly what they had showen. The value was MUCH greater than the purchase price and both the appraiser and goldsmith said it is an excellent cut/clear diamond. Just another option...
