Hello,

We know little about diamonds, and are looking for a diamond for our 10-year anniversary as a replacement for an engagement diamond I lost several years ago. The diamond linked below is in our budget and looks nice to me, but I'm not a qualified judge. What say the experts?

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3658583.htm

I know we could do better if we chose a worse color, but I'm oddly sensitive to shades of white. When we went to a jeweler and looked at diamonds, the Is and Js seemed yellow to me, even in the signature cuts.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

It's gorgeous stone. I personally would have dropped clarity to Vs2 and eyeclean, but there is NOTHING wrong with the stone. It's gorgeous.

What setting are you going for?

Gorgeous stone!!!! I wanted to throw something out there for consideration. While I think the setting you linked is lovely, it's shank is very wide and tall. And with the 6 prongs, together I'm worried it'll overwhelm your stone at 0.74 carats. Here's a setting that is absolutely stunning. It's four prongs though, although the 3rd link is of one modified to have a 6 prong tiffany style head.

Totally! I agree 100%. That setting is going to overwhelm that stone. The Legato with pave is a much better choice.
If that one doesn't speak to you (it's a gorgeous setting though, I can't recommend it highly enough), then this one is also an option: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/ritani-1rz2493-diamond-engagement-ring-3916.htm

Hmm...I'm not crazy about the super-thin band style that's in vogue right now, but I don't want to overwhelm my diamond, either. Would it help if I had the original band's height reduced and paired with a 4-pronged head?

emorrisjones,
JDDN makes a good point. This setting is 2.5mm wide (which is not super thin). Super thin would be 1.5 to 1.8mm (IMO). This
setting at 2.5mm would be more inline with the size of your center stone. The proportions would fit nicely and it will be a very
elegant and classy looking setting. The setting that you picked, while nice, is somewhat large and bulky looking for lack of a better
term. I would only recommend it for a largest stone or perhaps someone with large fingers.

Anyway, you've picked a beautiful stone!

Whiteflash is checking to see how much customizing is possible for the original band. There is nothing else on their site I am really crazy about. I am now leaning toward buying the diamond and taking it to an NYC jeweler who does settings. Maybe if I saw various settings in person/on my hand I'd have a better idea of what might work.

Is there anyone with a brick and mortar NYC location who is recommended and is willing to make settings for diamonds purchased elsewhere?

Here are some hand shots of the plain legato (no pave) with a .83 stone. (the plain legato is the same with as the pave one).

I cant find any pave with your size stone.

Here is a WF picture...stone is probably over 1 carat...

And here is one with your size stone...sorry no finger shot.

And here is the one you picked with a stone about your size. I think its a .72.

The legato is not that thin at all. Six thick prongs on a 75 point stone is not a good look. The legato is a more feminine setting, and unless you are the wearer, I would advise you to listen to the advice offered and not go for the other setting.

I went with the Legato. I'll have a viewing period during which I can return the stone and rings if I find they don't suit. I can see that the bead set would be too much with the .74 carat stone.

Thanks again to all for the helpful feedback.

I'll post when it arrives, and although I'm not much of a photographer, I'll try to post pics.
