Hello, The time has come to me to propose to mi gf, after much deliberation I have decided I want to buy a emerald cut diamond to mimic this engagement ring:

http://www.cartier.com/collections/bridal/engagement-rings/h4174500-solitaire-1895

I have searched all over Mexico for a reputable dealer but had no luck. I was pointed to buy it online as some Friends have used bluenile and have gotten good pieces. I also found online jamesallen.

I went online and found two rocks that I like (from specs) but after reading on forums I am now not certain if they are good rocks or which one is better. I was hoping you experts could help me in figuring out if it is. As buying online without seeing the rock and no knowledge on the subject is very hard for me and these two rox are the top of my Budget.

I have read that in emerald stones the cut is every important, this are the Stones I am looking at right now as options at blue nile but the Price increase from vs1 to vvs2 is considerable and they show no pictures do you thik its worth it to downgrade this two options? and are this two options good?

http://www.bluenile.com/mx/en/build-your-own-ring/diamond-details/LD01870243
http://www.bluenile.com/mx/en/build-your-own-ring/diamond-details/LD03270510

These would be the top of my Budget and are upgraded from vs1 to vvs2 but size is smaller, the jamesallen option looks very nice in the picture.

Thank for your help

Hi Diego and welcome!

Firstly, I think it's far preferable to buy fancy shapes from vendors that can provide images, otherwise it's really buying blind. Blue Nile are an excellent vendor but they do not provide essential images such as ASET and detailed photographs, James Allen does so that's a definite place to look. The EC you posted has potential, I will take a better look at it shortly and then see if I can suggest any more that might suit.

Clarity, usually it's best to stick to VS or above as step cuts show inclusions more readily, I would suggest VS2 or higher. Colour, GIA or AGS graded D - H is a good range to search within, an H colour can still face up very white so I would make H the initial cut off unless you prefer to stick to higher colour grades.

The setting shouldn't pose too much of a problem, the vendors do offer similar styles although they will differ slightly to the Cartier, but a 4 prong solitaire is definitely doable and is a classic design.

I would say let's scratch the BN stones at the moment and let's see what else is out there from vendors that can supply images in order to get you a beautiful diamond to present to your GF!

Just to clarify with the budget, how much do you have to allocate for the stone and setting please?

Hi diegogo :wavey:

I agree 100% with Lorelei on color and clarity... I also feel like VVS1 is overkill, since an eye clean VS will allow you to get the same stone for less OR a larger stone. :naughty: ;))

Also, you can't pick fancies from the numbers. Only rounds can be picked with numbers alone. James Allen is great because they have videos and will provide up to 3 ASETs.

Is the $22K the top of your budget for the entire ring (setting included) or for the stone by itself.

First of all THANK YOU for the help and quick reply Lorelei and msop 04. I am sticking then to this options for the time beign

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.79-carat-d-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-246795
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.85-carat-f-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-314925
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.80-carat-e-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-252508

I really like the look and cut of this rock and I agree fancy shapes can be hard to buy just on the numbers after looking at your post and going back online I looked at many different stones on jamesallen with similar numbers and it was amazing how different they looked from one another. As for Budget the 22k is my very max on only the Stone. (actually my max Budget was 18 but I figured I could stretch it too 22), as I figure a simple setting like the Carrier I like wont be too expensive. (again no clue on this) And I am also not sure how good this online shops are at settign the stones... As for size I rather have a Max 1.85k rock with very good specs and cut than a larger one, simply because larger tan that might be too big to wear down here in Mexico and I really want her to wear it.

regards and again thank you!!

diego

Ps.- Of the above options I posted, without no profesional knowledge just from looking at the pictures and specs I can see the first one is more expensive because of the color grade than the other 2 options even though the other two options have a better clarity ratting. But from the pictures the first option cut looks nicer to mee I dont know why.

Might I suggest reaching out to Good Old Gold to see what they would be able to offer?

They are able to call in many quality stones, and would be able to get you a video of the best-performing options, so you can choose with your eyes. Particularly when buying non-round stones, it's advantageous to have an expert in your corner, where you can bounce ideas/concerns.

I would get in touch with GOG, just to see what they might be able to offer here (including light performance metrics, etc.).

Best of luck!

I know exactly what you mean, EC's are tricky because they can vary so much even with similar numbers, that's why detailed images are essential. That's absolutely fine that you want quality to be paramount with your stone, I must admit there is nothing like a beautiful colourless EC with high clarity, it's the whole package! The setting you have in mind shouldn't be too difficult to find, a platinum 4 prong setting is a classic design and all the vendors offer varying versions of it, the ring will be stunning with a lovely EC in, I don't think there will be any issue with your GF wanting to wear it, it's a great size stone you are considering in an EC, large but not too overpowering.

I also find the look of the first diamond more appealing than the other two, although they both have potential, you would need to check with the third stone that the centre lights up when away from the camera, the centre looks a bit dark which could be a result of the photography set up. The next step would be to ask for ASET images for these 3, James Allen will provide 3 ASET images on request, that will help us narrow the field.

As Rocky mentions, you could certainly contact Jon at www.goodoldgold.com to see what he can find for you.

I hope this helps Diego, very exciting project and I look forward to seeing how things develop! :wavey:

Thanks for the reply guys! I sent an email to jamesallen to get the aset images, and also sent an email to jon at www.goodoldgold.com
to see what similar stones he has to offer.
ill keep yu posted
