Help needed on setting, please.

We are looking to upgrade my ring for our 15th anniversary. I have a big finger -size 8 -and and my hands aren''t dainty. I really think I like this setting but I am embarrassed to say that I am not sure how the center diamond would stay in the setting? And what the heck are those holes for? I was too embarrassed to ask the store itself so I thought I would ask here sheepishly. Thanks

wow! its a pretty substantial piece. I think they were just divets to accentuate their "vintage" feel of the design, however to me it looks like they missed a few diamond melees in there, so it looks a bit odd imo

They are prong set-heavy duty four prongs setting.

I prefer the one that D&T posted to be honest. My MIL had a ring like that, it is a replica of a Simon G if I am not mistaken. Sparkalicious here on PS has the real thing. It is a really gorgeous ring.
