okay so after much debate and looking and guessing and...well you know the drill, i think i''ve settled on a stone. a local jeweler was kind enough to bring in, with no obligation to buy, a diamond for me to take a look at. he showed me, under a microscope whatever inclusions he could find...and there was hardly any...very clean even magnified. he also used a fantasy scope to show me the H&A. very nice again. he also allowed me to examine it in different types of lighting to show how "bling bling" it was (sorry, my words, not his). incidentally, from my suggestion, he recently purchased an idealscope. he''s hoping to get it in the next couple of days to examine my diamond. he wanted to get it so he can examine the diamonds he plans to sell as well as (jokingly said)"satisfy customers like" me.

is there anyway to see if his order could be expedited lickity-split? any help would be appreciated. his name is russell oshita from the diamond specialists, inc. here in honolulu, hawaii. thanks.

unfortunately the vendor he got this stone from didn''t have a sarin, but it does come with an AGSL cert which is where i''m getting my data from. so here goes:

cert dated 11 April 2003
round brilliant
1.018 cts.
6.53 - 6.57 x 3.98mm
AGS-000
I, VS2
Fluor negligible
"H&A" & AGSL cert # inscribed on girdle
table 55%
depth 60.8%
crown angle 34.3
crown depth 15.1%
pav angle 41
pav depth 43.2%

scored 1.5 on HCA (ex, vg, vg, vg)

price $4194

i''m kinda nervous about finally making a decision, so as much feedback as i can get would be greatly appreciated. like mara told me, i can lost in the sea of diamonds. i gotta just go with one and see what happens.

please let me know if there is any other information you guys might need to help me.

thank you thank you thank you in advance for your help!

Price sounds good. Hard to tell exactly as I, VS2, isn't available for H&A in Price Stats. Short of getting an independent appraisal, if the Ideal Scope looks good and you like the sparkle, it sounds like a keeper. Might be a good idea to read up on Ideal Scope use/lighting/etc. so you are familiar with the process when you look for yourself. Since he has a microscope, I would ask to see the Cert inscription on the girdle also. Just to verify that as well.

Good Luck!

On top of what PQ said...if the H&A images look crisp and sharp, and the IdealScope image looks hot (reds and blacks, little or no whites), it sounds pretty darn good!!! Any particular reason you went for an I VS2 as opposed to an H SI1 or similar? Just because of the availability of the stone? The I should still face up white, esp if the cut is excellent, better cut stones face up whiter than a same color stone of average cut.

Good luck!!

hi pq,

the jeweler already did show me the inscription on the girdle to confirm that this is indeed the stone.

mara, no real reason on my choice except my "comfort zone" for clarity. yes i know that even SI1 can be eye-clean but i guess in my strange little mind, it just bothered me. the jeweler did show me all the different color grades using this thing that has samples of all the color grades under a fluorescent lamp. and although i knew this already from my research, i was also pleasantly surprised that he told me to make sure i view diamonds with a white background so you can see the color differences. i went to this other place that tried to show me diamonds on a black velvet cloth. i told him, "aren't you supposed to show them on a white surface? the black can make it seem whiter than it is." he looked surprised. i don't know if he was playing dumb or really didn't know this...i thinks it's the latter...but i began wondering, "who's the diamond salesman here?" this guy was recommended by a friend of mine. now i'm beginning to wonder if my friend got ripped off or not. but i digress...

hi giangi, yes the guy i'm dealing with seems very honest. kinda reminds me many of the guys here on PS. he told me that he wanted to make the customer happy with an honest sale. he didn't want to go through life always looking over his shoulder.

okay give it to me straight...in your opinions, are there any red-flags? i need to know before i dive in.

and not that i don't appreciate the comments i've received so far but i would welcome more, especially from other experts (rhino, niceice, rich, cut nut, et al.) i just figure, the more comments, the better.

Hey 69!

Since all we have here are the #'s they do indeed sound good. Add to that the benefit of being able to get it from a local B&M and the rest sounds like gravy. 34.3 crown angles with 41 pavilion angles with that table should certainly make for very fiery stone even if it's H&A's were a little off too (which they may or may not be) but at that price I wouldn't complain.
2.gif
I would not promise you you're stone looks like this but here is a diamond we recently scanned in with a 34.3 crown angle, 41 pavilion angle and a 55% table. BEAR IN MIND THAT THE MINOR FACETS CAN DRAMATICALLY change how the stone appears and without a facet by facet report there is also no guarantee to the precision in which your stone has been cut to but this is only a possibility. http://www.goodoldgold.com/1_01ct_g_vs1_h&a.htm

Godspeed on your upcoming engagement.

Peace,
Rhino

Here is a fun new feature and is of a stone that is almost identical to the linked stone. 34.4/40.9/55 This virtual diamond is one we had scanned in and is based off the 3d model of the actual diamond. No faulty numbers. The default light I included is jewelry store lighting but you can switch it in the GemAdvisor software to either Disco or Office light.

Enjoy.

Hi 69GM. This looks like it's probably a great stone at a excellent price. I ran the numbers through DiamCalc and came up with this POSSIBLE profile, and with a POSSIBLE simulated DiamCalc image. -

Light Return (mono)…...: 1.01 Very Good
Light Return (stereo)…..: 1.00 Very Good
(Non) Leakage (mono)..: 1.00 Very Good
(Non) Leakage (stereo).: 0.99 Very Good
Contrast............................: 0.97 Very Good
(Non) FishEye Effect…...: 1.00 Very Good

-----------
IdealScope- In general, the darker pink areas indicate areas of greater light return, with the lighter pink areas indicating areas of lesser light return. The black areas indicate areas of greater contrast, with the gray areas indicating areas of lesser contrast. The white areas indicate areas of light leakage. A good explanation of the IdealScope image along with examples can be found at https://www.pricescope.com/idealscope_indx.asp

Disclaimer- The facet arrangement and symmetry of the image will probably vary from your actual diamond, which may affect the light performance indicated, sometimes dramatically. The computer generates an image with “perfect” symmetry, which is rare. Also, the star/lower girdle facet lengths may be different from your diamond. The computer simulation is reproduced best when the actual diamond is being viewed and the image "tweaked" to the appearance of the diamond, or Sarin info is downloaded directly into the program. However, this "blind" reproduction should be helpful in considering the major light performance aspects.

This made me laugh.

Your stone sounds great. You've done your homework & the price sounds in line. You have the extra benefit of a visual. Your eyes are the only one that matters. A well cut "I" stone should face up quite white.

Good luck. I admire your careful selection for your soon "to be"!

hi richard,

thank you so much for going through the trouble of running the numbers for me. at least i know the potential is there!

hi F&I,

glad i could make you laugh! and thanks for the words of encouragement.

i wish i had the eagle-eye of all the experts here on the forum. after all this research, i know i'm still just a layman and the most intelligent thing i can say about it is, "it's purrrty!". well i guess that will have to do!

I am beginning to think that the process of purchasing an engagement ring is kind of like a funeral. It helps w/ the grieving over the loss of your bachelor days. Nervousness is a good thing. You are taking it seriously.

You know, at the end of the day - if it's purty - it's purty! I viewed several stones in all ranges before one jumped at me. You have to ask yourself - does it grab you & says "I'm the one!"

Ah, but that can be a problem. Sometimes they are all so beautiful, it's hard to choose.

What Fire and Ice?? No "slapping shoes" in the face of Loosing Bachelorhood?? You made me laugh to tears last week with your shoe slapping "tirade" in another thread.

yes pq. that was probably the hardest part. which one to go with. of course there are so many fine diamonds out there. i just had to take a leap of faith and not look back. i could drive myself crazy thinking that "the next diamond will be better so i better not buy this one..."
errrr.gif

in the end, price along with actually being able to see the "bling bling" made the decision for me.

hey wait! what's that picture over there at goodoldgold? and whiteflash? ooo ooo and niceice? and and superbcert? aaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!
