Hey everybody--

I'm about to buy a loose diamond that I will eventually put in a platinum surprise diamond engagement ring. However, I have a few questions first.

I'll start with all the details...
.74 CT Ideal cut, G, VS2,
5.85x5.89x3.59,
61.2%Depth, 56%Table
md-slthk girdle, no culet, no fluor
id polish, id symm, AGS cert
$2997 (not including setting)

I want to know if this is a good deal. I am a college student so cash is limited and I've obviously never have done this before, but I have been looking for the last year and a half--seriously. I also would like to know if a "G" colored diamond will look yellow when set in a platinum ring.

I was planning on buying the diamond loose online and then going to a local jeweler and having them put it in a setting. I know that I should bring the diamond with the certificate in to get it appraised to verify the stone. But do places appraise diamonds only if they are loose or can it be set in a ring?

Any other info would be highly appreciated!!! I know that obviously you all can't give me an exact answer since I'm only giving you the specs of the diamond, but I'll take anything you got!

Thanks again,
Greg

Oh yeah, another thing...

The setting that I was looking at is at both the local jeweler and the place that I was going to buy the diamond from online. That is my reason for asking the appraisal question in my previous post.

Sorry for the rambling, I'm just really nervous and excited and every other feeling because I am sooooooo close to buying this for my girlfriend. I just want it to be of the best quality for my piddily budget.

And if any of the things I am looking for are in archieved posts, I apologize.

Greg

I have a G color stone in platinum and it looks white to me. If I'm not mistaken, there are many, many people at PS with G stones in a white metal.

top... hoping somebody will answer my questions

The price looks about right.

Yes, an appraiser can definitely work with a mounted stone.

G is plenty white for platinum or white gold.

It sounds like a beautful stone. Please post pics when it's done.

Good luck!

G color will be fine set in plat. I just got a 1.26 carat, J, ACA from White Flash in platinum and it faces up white! The price on this diamond is fair and in line with comparables currently available.

Part of how you proceed on the appraisal and mounting will depend on the manufacturer of the setting. I think Scott Kay and Vatche both make "Surprise" sets. There may be others. Vatche requires that they set the diamond in their mount. Meaning your diamond and your setting will be sent to Vatche, and Vatche will mount the stone. Not sure about other "Surprise" manufacturers.

If you are getting a Vatche setting, you can either get an evaluation of the loose diamond prior to mounting, or wait and have the finished ring appraised.

If the manufacturer does not require they set the stone, then you have other options.

You can have the Vendor mount the stone and ship the completed ring to an appraiser. Appraisers are used to working with completed pieces, but there are some tests they cannot run on a mounted stone. Sarin, as an example, would need to be confirmed on the loose diamond.

You can have the loose stone and setting sent to an appraiser. After the evaluation is completed, the appraiser can arrange to mount the diamond for you. The appraiser can also write up a finished piece appraisal and ship you the completed ring.

You can have an evaluation of the loose diamond, then have the diamond sent to you. Purchase the setting locally and have that jeweler mount the diamond an write you a valuation statement of the finished ring.

There are a few other ways you can accomplish the whole task, but you get the idea.

One thing you should do, once you decide how you plan to proceed, is notify all affected parties what your plan is. Let the Vendor know where the diamond (and possibly setting) needs to be shipped. Contact the appraiser to expect your package so he/she can plan accordingly. Contact your jeweler, if you plan to purchase and mount the diamond locally, so the jeweler can be prepared as well.

Good Luck with the ring and the proposal. Be sure to let us know how everything turnd out. And, you do know that pics are Mandatory!!

Hi there!

If this is an AGS cert then it should list the crown & pavillion angles. Also, if you list the measurements of the stone that would be helpful also.

A G color stone is *plenty* white for a white metal setting. You can even go h/i/j in white metal should you choose to examine that route.

Can you clarify something regarding the setting? You mention that the vendor on line also has the setting you want. Why don't you let them do turnkey & limited your liability during the setting process. In this senario, you can have the diamond shipped to you and/or an independent appraiser then back to the vendor to set OR.. you can have the stone & setting shipped to the inde app. & have them set the stone.

G colors looks gorgeous in platinum.

As F&I has suggested, you can set a nice I color (preferably with some fluorescence) in white metal and end up getting a pretty diamond at a nice price.

The price for the stone you've posted looks fair... Could you post all the #'s listed on the AGS report? These would be really helpful!

You have a lot of good suggestions given to you and you can decide what is the easiest best or more inexpensive way for you to go. The price is fair and G will look good in Platinum. The one thing I would add is make sure you are taught or shown how to identify your own diamond. As a VS2 there should be recognizable clarity characteristics when viewed under magnification. Peace of mind is important.

Thank everyone! I really appreciate all the advice.

I've been doing my research for quite a while, but it's always nice having a little reassurance when I'm putting this much effort and money into the whole thing.

I do want to get a verification that the diamond/ring I think I'm buying actually is what I get in the mail. I assume that for insurance purposes, I'm going to have to get it appraised so I can have a 2nd opinion of the monetary value of it. Is this the case? Does anybody know of good places to get this done so I get a fair, yet slightly generous estimate of it's value in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area?

Thanks again for everybody's help!!!

PS: I was going to get the Vatche platinum surprise eng. ring.

There's Harry Cannon in Eagan. He's a PS approved appraiser. Just click the Appraisers link at the top of the page for info.

How crucial is it that the appraiser is PS approved? It seems like Harry is the only one in the upper midwest which makes me think that it's not as critical as I had originally thought it would be for insurance purposes. I suppose I could just go to a well respected local jeweler (in town) to do the same, right?

Are you still there PQCOLLECTIBLES?!? You seem to know a bit about appraisers and I haven't found any info searching the web...

Thanks,
Greg

By using a PS Approved Appraiser, most Vendors will ship direct to the Appraiser without requiring payment for the diamond in advance. The Appraiser works for you and will report directly to you. I just suggested the Appraiser in Eagan thinking you might be able to visit and see the diamond in person as well.

Approved Appraisers have had their credentials verified, and present no conflict of interest. They do not sell jewelry themselves. Appraisals is their business, not jewelry. Feel free to select any one on the list.

Hi Greg:
wavey.gif

I live in Minnesota and have used Harry recently for an appraisal on my earrings. He is very personable and easy to talk to. The appraisal will take approximately 1 and a 1/2 hours. If your stone has certification (AGS, GIA, EGL..), he will want you to bring it with you.

Harry will do the assessment right in front of you. It was actually amazing how close he was to the certification, considering that the stones were mounted. In a couple of days you get the written appraisal which was very comprehensive.

However, if you just want a written apprasial for insurance purposes most jewelry stores will send out your jewelry along with a copy of the certification for apprasial. I have done this before and it usually costs about half of what Harry charges. The old adage holds true: "You get what you pay for" All I got was a report that essentially "copied" what was on the certification. No 3rd party analysis. I even got to specify how much I wanted the ring to be appraised at!

Come to think of it I could have just created my own appraisal for free.

Some insurance companies don't even require an appraisal. You could just give them a copy of the sales receipt and any certifications that came with the stone.

I hope this helps.

Greg, a fancy shaped stone in G MAY look yellow, but if it's a well cut round, I think you're sweatin' for nothin'! G is nearly colorless and totally white, unless compared to a D! It will look great in platinum and you could even have a J set in white metals, with no prob!

See this picture from this thread, it's a J!
How low can you go!

Great testimonial for Harry Cannon's services, Toleong. Always nice to hear about the experiences of folks who have actually used an appraiser's service.

I used Harry Cannon to appraise my EightStar. First it was loose, and he did his analysis on it. Then I had it set, and he finished the full appraisal at no extra charge.

BTW, I lost the ring. Relying on his appraisal, which I had copied and submitted to the ins co, I got full replacement value for a new ring. (I had the ring listed as a rider on my policy.)

My pernt is that Harry's work is supported by his accreditation and was accepted on its merits in my case, thankfully.
