Help me keep my sanity!

Good Afternoon all --

So my sanity isn't doing well right now as I just got home from the family friend who is a jeweler and she said that she does not believe my stone to match the GIA certificate. She doesn't believe it is really an F nor does she believe it to be a 1.25. She could not find the GIA number with a 10x loupe (spelling?) either.

With all of that being said, she wanted to take it out of the setting to weigh it but since she was so sure I was ripped off, she didn't want to remove it from the setting and then have the jeweler I bought it from claim "I didn't sell you that one, that's another diamond."

Should the GIA number be on this diamond? The GIA report is dated March 13, 2012.

Should I contact GIA about this? A reputable appraiser?

The ONLY time it has been out of my (or my fiance's)sight is when we left it with him to clean or look at.

Please help and thanks again in advance!

I would take it to the jeweler and ask them to show you right then and there the GIA laser inscription on the stone, if they dont than I would contact the BBB

Yes! Get it appraised ASAP! It should have been appraised before you gave it to her. I'm not sure that all GIA stones are inscribed...but I could be wrong. I've seen some with the inscription but I'm not sure if that's typical...

1. Not all GIA stones are laser-inscribed. It says on the report whether it is or not. If it does not say on the report that it is laser-inscribed, then I would not expect to find an inscription. This does not mean that it is not the same stone.

2. Do NOT bring it to other jewelers for opinions - as they are also in the business of selling diamonds and settings, their opinions are biased. You NEED to bring it to an INDEPENDENT APPRAISER. Yes, you have to pay for this service. But it is the best way to know for sure.

3. This may have been said on this thread before, but we see "family friend" situations go wrong on here ALL THE TIME. Do not trust your family friend more than you would any other jeweler. Go to an independent appraiser for confirmation or rejection of your friend's findings.

good point distracts. Im surprised that your friend could tell just buy looking that its not an f or that the size was that far off, especially sense your FI could tell the color in a G, you would think it would be close to an F or she would have been able to see the color in this new stone as well. If you know its laser inscribed I would try and see that first. If not an independent appraisal is the way to go

I'm surprised too but also because in the picture - and I know the danger of judging from pictures but - it looked like an F (or otherwise very white) that was around 1.25ish on a size 6-7 finger. A 1.25 ct diamond should be around 7mm - you can measure this yourself with a ruler (not the most precise method, but perhaps close enough.)

The second one from the top here is a 1.2:

As always -- THANK YOU

Is there a list of appraisers that you would all recommend?

Are some better than others? is this the type of business that "you get what you pay for?" Should I ask my insurance company which ones they recommend?

Family Friend jeweler took the ring and put it in the holes and she showed me it was bigger than a 1.0 but when she put it in the 1.25 slot it wasn't like a 'close' fit / it seemed like it wasn't quite 1.25 ... i hope that makes sense?

There is a list of appraisers under the "resources" tab on the menu bar - https://www.pricescope.com/appraisers

I don't know about these hole things but diamonds of the same carat weight can have different face-up sizes, so you have to account not just for the face up measurement but also for the depth and thickness of the girdle. So... I'd take it to an appraiser. I really hope you didn't get ripped off though - it's a very pretty ring, so I hope it's what you paid for!

Thank you all for your input -- I have contacted an independent appraiser and have an appointment on Saturday morning.

With all of that being said, she DID say that if it is laser inscribed, it very well could be covered by a prong. Is that true? Is the inscription on the girdle normally THAT small?

Thanks again for all of your help -- Happy Holidays to you and your families

I see that your stone does indicate a laser inscription. I suppose it could be under a prong.

First of all, did she use calipers and measure the diameter of the stone??? The little hole method is certainly not the most accurate way of determining if a stone is the one on the cert! What did she say about the inclusions matching up? Did she look at it with the microscope or a high power loupe?

No, she did not use calipers to accurately measure. Like someone else mentioned above, the hole method isn't very accurate as the diamond face / table or whatever it is doesn't necessarily mean anything.

we are going to an independent appraiser on saturday. they told me they will keep the diamond in the setting but through precise calculations they will be able to tell if the stone matches the certificate.

should i show them the certificate first or should i wait until they are finished their work? (they told me it will take about an hour to an hour and a half)

Go ahead and show the certificate since the main purpose is to see if the stone matches the cert.

I just think it is sad the "family friend" jeweler cast doubt on the stone but didn't go a little further to check it out.
