I've been lurking around this site for a while and have finally decided that I need the expert advise of this forum.
I need help finding the perfect round brilliant stone for my GF of nearly three years. I have made up my mind on the setting, and it's going to be the SunBurst by Mark Morrell. With such a beautiful setting I need to find an equally stunning diamond to compliment it. As far as the criteria for the stone, this is what I was thinking:

Budget: +/- 5k, but would love it if it were more like 4500
Carat: .9 - 1
Cut: Ideal
Color: H-I , is I too low with a platinum setting?
Clarity: All i want is eye clean

Here are two diamonds I have found online - What are the expert opinions on these?

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2531871.htm
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-104047963005

Other general Questions:
Is it worthwhile to contact the Vendor (WhiteFlash or Brian Gavin) and work directly with them on finding the right stone?
Some of WhiteFlash's virtual selections are in the right price range but without all the detailed specs it's hard to know if they are quality diamonds. Have people had success purchasing stones that weren't in house?
My GF has a 7.75 ring size, will anything under 1ct look ridiculous on her hand? Also, with a larger finger I would imagine choosing a larger setting (Sunburst 3mm) would be better than a smaller one (Petite Sunburst 2.5mm), does that sound right?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I know the people who frequent these forums are so knowledgeable and friendly that I'm sure to get great feedback.

Thank so much for any help!

definitely a good idea - call and tell them what you're looking for and what you want to spend. They may have stock that has not been posted, ideas/info on some virtual stones that is not on the website...

yes. My stone is a virtual that WF sourced. It is a gamble - if you are lucky and find the perfect stone the first or second time, you will save a little on the branded premiums.. if you take several tries to find the perfect stone those savings evaporate in the shipping charges of sending the rejects back

some correct me if I'm wrong but I think the larger vs petite is based on stone size, not finger size..?

: Both yummy, I would be tempted to save the money and get the .90ct H SI1 since it is better color and the size difference is not very noticable. Ask for the hearts on the BGD, but it is sort of nothing to worry about with that brand.

Other general Questions:
Is it worthwhile to contact the Vendor (WhiteFlash or Brian Gavin) and work directly with them on finding the right stone? Sure, but if it is not on their website then you are talking about virtual stones. You can save a fair bit that way, but check the vendor policies on upgrades etc for non in-house stones if it matters to you.
Some of WhiteFlash's virtual selections are in the right price range but without all the detailed specs it's hard to know if they are quality diamonds. Have people had success purchasing stones that weren't in house?Of course. But you should call the vendor and get THEM to pick a winner of the virtual list, it is too hard on your own.

Also, with a larger finger I would imagine choosing a larger setting (Sunburst 3mm) would be better than a smaller one (Petite Sunburst 2.5mm), does that sound right?Does she want a larger diamond? Have you seen a 1ct in person? What size diamonds are common in her socuial circle? I think a wider band is better on larger hands, but thinner bands make the diamond look bigger. That is sort of a personal preference thing. Do you know her preferneces?

Thanks for the replies.

As far as her preferences go, we looked at rings/stone and most of the ones we looked at were around 1ct. Mostly because that's what I knew I was shooting for though. The 1 ct range seemed to work nicely and she was comfortable with it and I think it would be similar in size to her friends.

I think at this point I'm going to contact possibly Whiteflash and Brian Gavin to start working directly with them on my search. Any personal preferences out there about working directly with either of these two vendors. Also any direct experience with working with these vendors and Mark Morrell?

Thanks again for the help!
