Pink and red are the same hue, just differnt tones and or saturation, As such I do not understand how pink could be a secondary hue of red.

As for the spinel what can I say. We all have our own set of values we look for in the stones we collect.

Well then you would like the Hope diamond, it''s graded a fancy grey blue!! I wouldn''t call that cheap!!

Some people like grey modifiers. I have a violet tourmaline with a grey modifier, and I think it gives it an icey cool color. I don''t like grey modifiers in other kinds of stones though.
I don''t like the Hope diamond. There, it''s out. I''m waiting to be thwomped.

You know, that gemrite spinel in the picture reminded me so much of the Hope diamond in the famous Tino Hammid photo of it where it''s unset. Of course a diamond, any diamond, it''s not just about color, but about their amazing refractive abilities. However, I do hear you, as I''ve seen many prettier blue colored dieamonds on fancydiamonds.net (they typically have some green in them though). However, I''ve never seen any as huge as the Hope!! I think what makes the Hope special is it''s size and color in combination together.

I once asked about pinks a long time ago and was told that pink is really a watered down red. When the saturation of red (or is it the tone? I''ve already forgotten) decreases, the colour becomes pink.

Oh boy, I am royally confused now. :) I think I might like the gray modifier as it seems to soften the shade of blue. I like softer shades. I''m not looking for something that looks like a sapphire although I did buy that light blue sapphire from Dan this morning. I love blue. What can I say?

A gray modifier makes the stone looks icy and steely, not a soft blue.

I guess that''s where we differ. I think icy blue is a soft color. To me ceylon color is too bright. I guess I like subdued colors.

TL,
I hope you can clarify this. You''ve stated repeatedly that spinels do nothing for you. If that''s the case, why weigh in on someone''s spinel search?

Joy2theworld I can''t wait to see your pics! I was watching that sapphire wanting to see how it turned out but missed seeing the pic -- I''m glad you got it, and hope you''ll post your pics!

As far as I can tell TL seems to be trying to help the OP. I guess we don''t have to like things to help other people out.

But, if one does not like any token of a particular type, how is one going to appreciate any specimen, however fine? Also, it's not just a species we're discussing here, but an entire family of gems. TL, no offence meant -- I'm just curious.

Just because someone wouldn't choose to wear a certain stone doesn't stop them from understanding how to work out what is good or not.

Only my opinion of course.

Harriet,
Let me explain myself since you asked for clarification. I really am not a great lover of spinels and I probably do put them down a tad bit too much. I try to impart my experiences with spinels as a reference so that people can make a decision about them, but while doing that, I do make negative comments, and that probably isn't helpful, as you suggest. You are right, I made the entire species probably sound bad by generalizing, and there are some magnificent specimens of spinels as exemplified by ColorMyWorld's collection.

Consequently, I should be more open minded about it, and not be so hasty to make spinels sound so bad. Afterall, color is a very subjective thing, and many people on this board love their spinels very much. I apologize if I came across offensive to anyone on this board.

It isn''t offensive at all to me. It''s good to have a different perspective as it may turn out that spinels do nothing for the prospective buyer after all too.

Hi TL,
No offence taken. Hey, shall we pay Colormyworld a visit?

Wouldn''t you rather have prospective buyers make up their own minds?

TL has answered my question perfectly. As an analogy, imagine that I''m an art historian who doesn''t care a whit about Rothkos. How would I be able to assess the relative merits and demerits of two different pieces?

Or we could put it in an easier way ....

Imagine my daughter wants an ipod. Now I don''t particularly want or need an ipod. In fact I am sick of trying to get my sons attention when he has his earphones in. My daughter explains to me what she is looking for in terms of spec and memory size. I am quite able to choose one for her based on her requirements. It doesn''t mean I have to like them to choose a decent one for her.

Even given parameters, gemstones are not fungible unlike Ipods. At any rate, Tourmaline Lover has spoken. There is no point in continuing this discussion.

Good idea Harriet. I think this thread has been hijacked enough anyway.

Joy,
Sorry for my part in the threadjack. With the Tucson show coming up, how about contacting one of the vendors or cutters to find you a blue spinel? Jeff White, for instance, had luck at last year's convention. It will be a belated birthday pressie. Still, better late than never.

Maisie and everyone else,
Any other ideas?

Joy - Was the spinel that I posted in my thread the one that you said you liked the color of?! If so let me know because I ended up going with a different one and I''d be happy to give you the information on the one I posted!

Christine,
It was... I don''t get this whole gray thing. I see it in the pinks, but not the blues. I did buy one this week, but I''m not sure it is going to be the size that I want. I think I need about 1.5 carats or a little more because I have really chubby fingers.

Pink stones do not show gray; they typically tend to show browns.

In another thread where they were explaining the gray hue, they showed a picture of a pink stone. I could see "gray" in that one.

Do you have the link?

Sorry, but I am not like most of you ladies in gentleman in terms of saving links to everything. It was in a recent post about sapphires and spinels and it was a link to an older post. Some nice ladies were trying to explain to me the gray hues in stones.
