OMG OMG OMG!!!! Ok... Friday I was cleaning out a desk (left by a disgruntled former employee) and when I was taking things out, this "ink'''' BLACK ink refiller... "exploded" in my hand... it went all over my spess and the diamonds, down in the crevices etc etc!! Everything turned BLACK... OMG.. it got up into the back of the "bezel" of my ring too.!!!!!! So I rushed over and ran it under water and speed to the jewelers. he has had it since then. He sais that they have been trying to clean it since Friday. To somewhat NO avail!! They were able to get most of the ink off the spess, but the diamonds (the setting and prongs) are still a bit black from the ink. He said we could try a few things.

1>Take out the garnet and "boil" the setting... But he said "very sternly" that removing a garnet puts it at risk of getting damaged... hmmmmm....
2>try Rhodium plating it, but it may not stick to the ring where the ink is.. which defeats the purpose... OMG...

What am I going to do??????

Yikes!! That''s a bummer, but I''m sure it will be fine. Once I had a diamond in my asscher ring turn a dark brown. I cleaned it and cleaned it in my US. Took it to a jeweler to have it steamed clean. That didn''t work either. I sent the ring back to quest where they let is sit in some kind of acid wash. I was like acid??? But they knew what they were doing and the stone came out bright white. They said something funky got behind the stone which is funny cause I am so careful with it. Hopefully the experts will chime in, and ease your mind. As well as to give you suggestions as what your jeweler can use. Hang in there!!!!

I don''t have any cleaning suggestions, I just wanted to say ''Poor you!!!'' , that would suck. But I am sure the technical wizzes we have at our disposal here will know of something for sure!

a

Oh No, Mine, not your beautiful ring!!!!!!! I wish I had a suggestion but I don''t. All I can do is give you positive thoughts that it will come clean soon!

I would call the manufacturer of the ink and ask what to use for a solvent.

OMG! I am so sorry!

That happened once to my mom''s opal ring. It''s a HUGE opal, maybe an inch in length -- and when I was a little girl I colored it with a marker! Opals are very fragile and I think somewhat porous, so she thought all was lost. But the jeweler got it off. I wish I knew how but it was years and years ago!

I hope your jeweler can boil off the ink without damaging your beautiful spess!!! The diamonds will be fine. I just worry about your delicate spess. I am sure if he''s careful, it will be OK. You must miss your ring, you poor thing.

(((sending you good ring vibes)))

EEK! I am so sorry to hear of this disaster. What a mess! I think calling the ink manufacturer is a really fine idea - I am sure they have lots of experience getting it off stuff. I feel so bad for you - hang in there and keep trying - I bet in the end it will all come off.

MINE! did they try just alcohol, it's almost neutral (ph about 6) and should not damage a garnet? What did they try?
I forwarded your topic to some experts...
ETA: let's also move to RT.

I''d try #2 because I don''t see how it could hurt... also, what about that gunkoff stuff

I don''t see why rubbing alcohol wouldn''t work, and if a more potent solvent is necessary perhaps an acetone solution. Both are miscible with water.

I hope your jeweler doesn''t panic and do something to damage the setting/stone...it''s such a beauty!

Good luck!

OMG, that is so horrible. I hope your jeweler will come up with a good solution. Since he is worried about removing the stone, I have 2 questions. Is the ring insured? Did you report this incident to your employer? (Just in case there is any damage.)

The thing that normally removes ink is hairspray. If I need to take Sharpie writing off something, I spray it with hairspray and the ink comes off. Not sure if it has something to do with alcohol in the harispray or not, but it usually works.

I surely am sorry to hear this, MINE!!!

So sorry to hear this! I hope the jeweler gets it looking like new.

I would not use hairspray on pave because you will have another task to get it out and it may not be easy so you will end up with black ink with protective gloss on it between the beads...
I would not also risk going with either one of 2 choices because as far as my short research on ink tells there are pigments and resins involved - both very much heat activated to stick considering 1 option and being anti-adhesive film in 2nd.
Acetonitrile is another solvent maybe even better than alcohol and it will wash away with water.

Just solvent clean it. Ink has no real chemical resistance. Black is a blend of several colors. Lacquer thinner will definitely get the ink or just about anything else. Denatured alcohol, ethanol, methanol, or acetone also. Lacquer thinner and acetone are the more aggressive of those 4. If garnet isn't affected by solvents, he could use any of those.

Oh Mine I just wanted to say how sorry I am, but I''m sure everything will be fine! Keep us posted.

UGHH!!! I just cannot beleive that this has happened. HE showed me the ring today and the garnet looks ok... but I can still see the "black" behind the stone.. it is almost like it has leakage... UGH>.....

And the ink around the small diamonds.. make it look....cheap...kinda... so I know it is noticable. He said that he was worried about being able to clean the small diamonds without removing the garnet.

He is trying to clean it tonight and tomorrow and then he said we could decide after that. I know that he has used some cleansers, but he too is worried about what will react poorly with the garnet... and keep in mind.. it was virtually "immersed" in inky black.

I am going to suggest the acetone to him tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes and advice.

Pscope.... I agree about neither option,... that is when I get worried.. cause what if nothing else works? What am I going to do then.. Ugh..... I cannot believe this happened!!

Oh dear. I have this tendency to write all over my favorite shirts with ink. When that happens, I use either Gonzo stain remover or Oxiclean. I''d try the Gonzo first because it seems more neutral. It always gets the ink out of my clothes. It also feels like water, so that''s why I thought it might help. The oxiclean actually heats up whatever material I''m trying to clean, so only try that if the experts think it''s ok. I''ve tried searching for the ingredients for Gonzo, but can''t find it. I''ve also used up my entire bottle, so I can''t get the ingredients from that either. I bought it at Linens n'' Things or Bed Bath and Beyond. I think Restoration Hardware also sells it.

I hope you find something that works!!

Oh Crap! That SUXS! I had no idea ink could cause so much damage. I''m sorry honey-- you know how much I love your ring. I hope SOMETHING works. YIKES!

I hate to ask, but is the ring insured?

rememebr that organic solvents will not hurt your ring, so try all of the ones suggested. go with a bottle of ethanol vodka in hand, ethanol (everclear) better, acetone, paint thinner, acetonitrile, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol. can all these at home depot or the liquor store.

yeh, it is insured... But replacing the garnet with one that has the same color and specs,,,, etc.. will be exceedly difficult...

As well as all the other solvents recomended:

In Oz there is a little white botle like an eyedropper with ink stain remover for clothes.

if solvents do not work - then try very carefully heating them by placing them in a bowl in a bowl of boiling water. If need be keep replacing the boiling water.

NO NAKED FLAMES!!!!

I see no reason why a jeweller would have any special ability - and if your jeweller thinks rhodium plating will help then change jewellers as we all know that we use nail varnish to stop plating going onto yellow gold areas - so ink would do the same thing as it stops the exchange of electrons.

We regularly get the nail varnish off by putting varnish remover (acetone) into a small jar and placing it into the very hot water in the ultrasonic vibrator.

I am so so sorry to read this. I hope it all works out quickly for you.

Hey everyone!!

I got my ring back this evening.... IT LOOKS FABULOUS!!! I could not see any ink at all, not on the stone, behind the stone, in the crevices... NOTHING!!!

It is so clean and beautiful!!! On my way home I stopped to get something to eat and the ladies behind the deli counter all ooohhh and ahhhh cause they said it was sparkling in the lights.

I could have hugged my jeweler. I asked him what he did to get the ink off and he said that he was at a cocktail party last night and got an idea. Then he just winked. Whatever he did... it is just beautiful!!!

SO all is very very well.... As a matter a fact... I am a little embarrassed to admit that it is much cleaner than it was before the got on it....

Thank you everyone for your advice...

Shoo.... I am defnitely resting easier tonight and the ring is feeling nice and heavy on my finger (not to mention sparkly!!!!)

So so so glad!! If you are willing to share, who is this wonderful jeweler?

I am so glad you have the ring back and all is well. I love your spess and orange is my favorite color. It is just amazing. I was shocked to read the ink story and even shared it with my FI. He was slightly interested so I looked up all the pretty pictures of it to get him to appreciate it more. I was informed that if I ever have to clean out someone''s desk or change a toner cartridge I will need to wear rubber gloves! He works in a lab they so are easier to come by than in a regular office.
