Hello all,

Following my gemstone journey, I have now arrived at the emerald stage.
I have found an emerald that pleases me but I’m such a beginner in emerald buying that I am looking for your valuable input.

It’s a nice glowy green under led light, which is what attracted me. Quite included but it adds a bit of personality, I don’t mind it (if it doesn’t mean more prone to chipping ?).
It is much more of a blue green in natural light. It’s also less glowy.
Is this normal ? What do you think of the emerald ?

Regarding specs, it’s from Afghanistan - with minor oil treatment
It’s more reasonably priced than Colombian emeralds, which is a plus for me.

Looking forward to picking your brain !

Regards,

Hello there and welcome to the boards! You said the gem pleases you and is within your budget, so that's really what matters. But if you are open to opinions nonetheless, this is what I would say. Judging solely by the media provided, this stone appears to have a yellow modifier. In the natural light pix, it seems less so, but that's something I would need clarified if I were considering a purchase. Also, yes, it is more included than I would personally prefer. Be sure you have a cert from a reputable lab stating minor oil. I also agree that I'm not seeing the glow we love so much with emeralds... another point to consider. Hope this is helpful and not a raindrop on your parade.

Dear Autumn,

Happy holidays !

Thanks for answering, your advice is appreciated.

I decided not to go for that one, I’m looking for a more bluer green emerald and most importantly for a nice glow.

The hunt stays on !

Yes agree, it’s toning towards the “lime/ yellow” than blue green. And not seeing much glow. Enjoy the journey to the right one for youl

While we’re here, may I also pick your brain about this sapphire ?

I don’t know what to think of it.
On one side, it seems to have a good saturation and should be a royal blue sapphire of good quality that doesn’t black out
On the other side, I’m a sapphire beginner that might be fooled by the camera.
It’s slightly above 2 carat, heated

Could you kindly tell me what you think of it ?

It won’t be black but it’ll be pretty dark.

In real life, away from the fancy lighting and camera, a royal blue will look like this under normal light

A saturated cornflower however will look like this under poor lighting conditions

Got it, thanks
I would like a tinge lighter then, I will aim for a peacock or a nice cornflower blue like your second photo. Might still lowball an offer, I kind of like that deep blue. Just wanted to make sure there isn't any red flag on the stone I wouldn't see.

By the way, I really like the ring on your first pic. Is that a yellow zircon ? Seems very sparkly.

Yellow sapphire! It has a lovely cut which gives it a wonderful sparkle that’s not the norm for sapphires.

Re the blue: Yes go for it! For the right price, why not! I was offered a much nicer cornflower blue for the blue centre of this ring but it was 4 times the price. Lovely stone at a fair price but I needed significantly cheaper for this project so I bought the royal (which I like just fine).

It's a very saturated blue, but quite the deep tone. That's the tradeoff. In good light you're gonna have an absolute stunner. But otherwise it will be more difficult to enjoy the colour.

Hello all, hope you’re enjoying the week end.

I’m coming back with a new sapphire proposition.
I like this one quite a lot, it’s a bit lighter than the previous but still got that great saturation I’m looking for.
It’s slightly bigger too, at 3 carat. Heated.

What do you think of it ?

Objectively I think it’s very pretty. I personally would want something with a bit more glow. But I can’t actually find anything wrong with this stone. I guess for me it’s missing that velvety glow but I think some folks would think that’s just cloudy! Your stone is very blue and crisp. If you like it and it’s the right price, go for it! It’s a lovely stone!
