Good morning all. Buying an engagement ring for my soon to be better half, wanted to get some advice.

She's looking for marquise cut, solitaire setting (although when we went shopping she did like a couple side stones), carat anywhere from .75-1.00 and the clarity/color to be of better quality. I'm looking to spend $2,000-$3,000. I have found four rings that I think will get the job done and make her smile when I propose. I am going the route of shopping online (I went to 15 stores and marquise cuts are hard to find). There are three different sites I am choosing from.

James Allen

Carat: .86
Color: I
Clarity: SI2

I have heard great reviews about James Allen. The size is fine and clarity okay, the color is the worst of all three. But again I've heard good things about James Allen rings and love how you can view what you are buying (potentially).

Carat: .72 (plus .10 on side stones)
Color: G
Clarity: SI2

Another James Allen. The only one I like with the side stone that I've seen so far.

Blue Nile

Carat: .77
Color: F
Clarity: SI2

I've heard good things about Blue Nile as well. The carat is obviously smaller, but the setting is pretty cool and the color obviously is beautiful.

Four Mine

Carat: .90
Color: H
Clarity: SI2

I really don't know much about Four Mine, but after doing some brief research they seem legit (maybe not as well known as the above two). The carat is biggest and color is nice, just don't know much about the company.

With all the details given (companies, ring info, etc), is there any ring that stands out of the three? Or if none of them are all that special, any recommendations of where to go next?

Thank you!

Hi MDfresh...you need to put the stones on hold and provide us with links so we can look at the stone's light return.

Also, if you could provide your budget we can help look for stones with nice faceting patterns and good light return. James Allen is a good place
to start. Blue Nile is another option.

The more important question is, are these stones worthwhile? You're dropping several thousand dollars on a stone, you want it to be beautiful, right? I would focus on the STONE first and then the setting after. Just some minor sleuthing and i found the stones you're most likely looking at from JA. The first one is a definite pass. SI2 stones are iffy. You can absolutely find some nice stones that are eye clean and do not inhibit light return but more than likely, the inclusions make for a dull stone. The second JA stone is really interesting if it's the one i'm looking at.

anyway, that said, we can help with stone choice to make sure you end up with a nice sparkly stone. because what's a diamond if it's not sparkly?

When buying marquise , have the stone in the setting before buying it.
Bowties that were not there loose will be visible on some stones.
Marquise cuts are unique. They are shallow, and finding a stone that looks the same set as unset is difficult.

Also be sure and get the tip and the sides well covered with the prongs. The side prongs need to be thick as does the ones on the top and bottom.
Be sure you have insurance on it for chips.

I have owned several marquise, they are beautiful stones. But do require extra care.
Oh and be sure when it is set it is reachable with a toothbrush. Becuase the cut is shallow ( more light leakage than an ideal round) grease or oil or any lotion will affect the look of the stone and you will want to clean it more often

I saw a larger one that was nice on the yadav site the other day. It was within your budget but well over a carat. Might be worth checking.
