Hi guys,

First off --- sorry if this is in the wrong location on this forum - I thought it might count as a question regarding settings. Any help is appreciated!

I've been looking at engagement rings recently and noticed that I like a specific version of (what I believe is) a cathedral style.

For example:

I. http://www.kay.com/images/products/9907/990741112_SV_LG.jpg

II. http://design.jared-diamonds.com/_images/jewelry/210954602_SV_LG_JAR.jpg

III. http://www.diamondclassicjewelry.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/side_view/458x500/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/-/3-0030-1-s.jpg
[Note: I'm not a fan of this last one, but it's another example of the general band style].

Although different, what I like about these styles is the way that the band curves out somewhat near the diamond as opposed to being concave (i.e., http://www.diamondclassicjewelry.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/side_view/458x500/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/-/3-0006-1-s_1.jpg) or flush with the diamond (i.e., http://media-cache5.pinterest.com/upload/3307399696331240_P4FsgDb9_f.jpg).

So the question is -- how would I identify the version of cathedral style that I like? As you probably know, often when looking at rings online - you can see the top shot, but have to click on it to see the side view, and it has been really hard to find or narrow down without knowing (vocabulary-wise) what I'm looking for. Similarly, it'd be easier to look at rings in person in jewelry stores if I or my boyfriend could more easily communicate what my band preference is (without having to draw it lol).

[Note: The rest of the details, side-diamonds, princess vs. round cut, white-gold band etc... I know the terminology and my preferences... it's just the band style that is impeding on my search].

Thanks!

are you specifically looking for the big space between the head and the band? also are you looking for a high setting? many of the ones you posted are super high

yes, it is called a cathedral setting although some cathedral settings are concave and some are integrated (the band connects to the head)

I do like the space between the head and the band. I've seen the first one I posted in person. However, I also liked the second one because the band curves out a little and is touching the smaller side diamonds (as opposed to the main diamond/head). So as long as there is separation between the band and the head in some way, I like it (granted, this is specifically for Cathedral style - wouldn't apply to other styles). I don't mind the height - that's going to depend on the stone. For example, the first one on there (which I saw in person) I would get a larger stone in than what it typically comes with.

Okay, it's definitely helpful to know that a cathedral setting is the general style I'm looking at. The ones you mention - concave or integrated - are the types of cathedrals that don't draw my attention as much. Wish there was a specific words for the curved slightly separated (from the head) cathedral styles (i.e., non-concaved? non-flush/integrated? lol).

Something to think about is whether it would bother you that the gap between the head and the band would be prone to catching on things - sleeves when you put your clothing on or longer sleeves, pockets, etc. I know it would drive me crazy. If it doesn't bother you at all, then go for it. Just wanted to make sure you knew to think about it. Unfortunately I don't know of a name for the kind of style you're looking for. I have definitely seen it around though.
