Hello! I am new to this site... I have enjoyed reading up as much as I can on pricescope over the past week or so and thought it was about time I finally participate.

The Big Day for my proposal is going to be December 29th and I have just started to set the wheels into motion to find my (really her) ideal ring. Originally I thought I was going to do something simple and classic... But after a trip to Tiffany''s to get a few bracelets, earrings etc cleaned I found her taste to be a little different. Since my number 1 priority is to make her happy, I have obviously shifted gears as to what I am looking for.

Basically she loved the Tiffany Legacy Ring, the problem is that it''s a little high for my price range (I''m looking to spend about 10k). So I have found a jeweler here in San Diego called Charles Koll (http://charleskoll.com/) and they seem to be pretty cool, and there work seems outstanding. I think they will be more than capable of taking care of creating a ring on par with the legacy.

Finally my questions are...
- What is a good sized stone for this type of Ring? (I was thinking about 1.3ct)
- What is the best stone for this ring? Asscher, Cushion, Radiant? (I like the aascher but I remember in Tiffany''s my misses to be didn''t like the emerald cuts, maybe the asscher is too similar?)
- is color “G” not clear enough for platinum? (I don’t want the stone to look dingy)

We did a similar thing when we got engaged. We had the Legacy made. When I was picking out stones I wanted a radiant but I also really liked a cushion. If she doesn''t like the emerald cut she may not want an Asher either. The stone at Tiffany''s is not really a Cushion or an Asher. To me it looks like a Cushion on the top and an Asher on the bottom. If she likes the roundness on the top of the Tiffany''s stone I would go with a Cushion. They are all lovely though. I think 1.3 is a great size for that ring. When I was at Tiffany''s thats the one we were going to get. Mine is a 1.52 but it doesn''t make the ring too large. I tried on one with 2ct and it was too large for my hand.

One thing to find out, does she want the wedding ring to fit up flush with the ering? If she does you may want to take that into consideration when you are getting the ring made.

I think that a G looks great in Plat. When you are looking at stones compare different G stones on white paper, some G''s are whiter then others. I think what you are doing will be lovely. If you want to see pics of my ring here is the link to our posts.

Thanks, I am starting to realize that a cushion or radiant are definitely the best 2 options for this ring, especially since the setting is so deep. Although I really like the Aasher... I think the other stones would make her happiest (that''s the goal).

Thanks again!

Thanks for the help! I went to Tiffany''s today and got a 1.07ct Legacy priced out at about $17-18k (ouch). After reading your post I totally agree about the customization. There is something to be said for a ring, with subtle differences that make it unique and yours.

As for the band... I''m not sure yet. With the tapered style Legacy, a band definitely does not go well. At tiffany''s they mentions getting matching platinum bands and then the Legacy would be worn on the right hand? Regardless your ring is stunning, I can only hope to get something comparable out here in San Diego.

I am in the process of putting together some sketches now, hopefully I will have the wheels of progress in motion by the end of the month.

I also loved the legacy but didn''t not want to pay that ridiculous price. Dimend Scaasi in Chicago has a similar setting, and I got to customize it slightly. I went with a .89 carat Asscher and clipped the corners on the halo. I also had the center stone prong set so it was slightly higher than the halo (bezel was just a little too low for me). Anyway, it all turned out beautifully. Find out what, exactly, your girlfriend likes about the legacy and and what she doesn''t, and then customize, customize! If she doesn''t like step cuts, she might not like the Asscher. And as for size of stone... that''s totally a personal preference. A .89 with a halo looks like 2 ct stone on my finger (size 5.5), and I didn''t want anything more than that.

Here''s a pic of dimend Scaasi''s legacy-like setting:

And here are a couple of pics of my ring. I also widened the band as it approached the head.

BTW, LaurenAdam is right--the stone in the tiffany ring isn''t a true cushion. It does appear to have some step cuts in it, so maybe your girlfriend would consider step cuts.

Here''s my 1.08 ct cushion that is similar to the legacy setting.

The more I see all of your rings the more I understand why she loves this setting. My only obstacle from here on will be the band(s?).

I have seen the non-tapered style with a band but not the tapered style (like yours nevlossiel). Do you think 2 bands goes best with this type of ring or 1? I really like the diamond bands, so I know I want to do that... Any suggestions, feedback or experience in this?

Basically the same layout as the legacy with the graduated stones... but I want to leave out the patterns around the edged and smooth out the transitions between the different areas of the ring.

Have any of you guys seen similar approaches to this style ring?

Did you see the ring posted above from Dimend Scaasi? It is almost exactly like what you want! If it were me, I''d just buy my diamond from him and have him make the setting and the matching band since you know he can do it. I definitely prefer one wedding band with a ring that ornate. Dimend Scaasi has excellent quality. You do need to buy the stoen from them. Many people on here have had custom rings done by one of the PS vendors from a distance.

nevlossiel.... where have you been hiding that gorgeous ring??? Have you posted a thread on Show me the Ring yet? I just love it!!!!

Yes, that ring is very close... But all patterning (the braded look) on the edges is what im thinking about changing... I definitely prefer the more flowing lines on this one vs the Legacy.

I have family in Chicago, so it wouldn''t be too big of a stretch to fly out there and oversee things (plus I could catch a Bears game

). I have 3 more jewelers I want to look at here in SD , but I will definitely check give Dimend Scaasi a call and see what the pricing etc is like.
