HELP! I LOST MY DIAMOND!!!!

:errrr:

I got divorced in 2004. My marriage lasted only 9 months and it cost me over $100,000. Apparently, I got half of her $1 and she got half of my $200,000. Anyway, I fought hard for the diamond ring back and had to pay her for it (essentially buying the diamond and ring 2X). Yes, it was a bad move, but the diamond ring was all that was important to me at the time(considering I spent months on pricescope picking out the perfect one).

Well, time heals everything, and I wanted to propose to my girlfriend of three years this Christmas. Upon suggestions from this forum NOT to give my gf the same ring, I had a new BGD ring all picked out. They sent me an invoice, and all I had to do was pay them and send in the original diamond ( A CUT ABOVE 1.2ct G SI).

So I asked my Mom over Thanksgiving for the diamond ( she had told me she would keep it safe for me right after the divorce).

Well, she can't find it. :errrr: I cried for the first time in 6 years. :((

I really don't know what to do at this point. At this current point in my life, I don't have the money to buy another one. In fact, I'm pretty much broke. I've only got about $2K in the bank now. My mom said she could give me $7K to replace the diamond(even though I paid about 2K more with the setting), but now I'm thinking I should just buy a much smaller diamond, maybe a ACA .75ct and save the rest for a wedding, etc.

I'm still holding on for hope that she finds it, but at this point, I have less than 30 days to get a diamond and a ring.

I tried my best to hide my stress from my gf, but she knows me too well. I keep telling her that nothing's wrong, when clearly something is. (I've had a headache for 2 weeks now, likely from the stress).

To make matters worse, BGD has sent me like 6 invoices because I was all ready to purchase their ring.

I'm not sure what to do. Do I tell my gf the situation and postpone the engagement?

Do I ask my mom to give me the $7K and buy a $4K diamond ring?

Can someone help me pick out the perfect diamond? I was thinking to go back to WF and get A Cut Above, because maybe one day I'd like to upgrade.

Sorry for the long read. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry for your troubles. When you say your mother can't find it, where does she think it is - still somewhere in the house? Would someone have stolen it? Is it still on someone's insurance policy?

yikes!

People can certainly help you to find a perfect new diamond... do you or your mom remember- at all- where she was keeping the ring?

My mom is getting up there in age, and just doesn't remember where she put it. She "thinks" it's somewhere in the house, but she's not sure where she put it. We have searched everywhere. She thinks the cleaning lady may have stolen it, but who knows. Most likely, she simply hid it somewhere, and can't remember where she put it. I don't believe there is insurance on the ring.

Was it insured? If it was then you should be covered. If I were in your shoes I would start fresh. It seems like you have made some poor choices in the past with jewelry (like buying the ring back from your X at more then it's worth). I would talk to you GF and ask her what she would perfer a bigger diamond or more money for the wedding. Goodluck!

Have you been through all the dresser drawers and closet shelves? I'd have to be absolutely convinced that it wasn't anywhere in that house before I spent money on another stone.

yeah I would search EVERYWHERE. Then, if you really can't find it...get a smaller diamond with an upgrade policy? both WF and BGD have good upgrade policies.

Im so sorry your mum lost the stone. Thats terrible news! I would speak to your GF about it and ask her what she thinks. There is a lesson to be learned here though... Insurance is far cheaper than replacing a lost diamond. Please make sure you insure the next one!!

I am sorry for all the troubles you have had. I hope the ring turns up. I would buy from a vendor that you can upgrade with later.
That sounds like a good plan.

I am so sorry that the diamond cannot be found... :(

But in all honesty, if it's "hiding" somewhere, and at this moment cannot be found, I don't think this diamond was supposed to be on a woman's finger! I'd take this as a sign that you are better off starting a new chapter in your life with a "new" stone...

That's just silly me talking though...

The diamond WILL turn out later - i am positive - then at that time, you can decide what to do with it...

So sorry about your diamond, but I agree, unless you really want to surprise her, I would ask her what she wants, otherwise, go ahead with your plan for the $4000 diamond with upgradable vendor.

Hunt everywhere. I tend to be a hider of objects myself, and sometimes it can take me ages to remember my last hiding place (seriously, I'm worse than a squirrel). Ask your mom what "sorts" of places she hides things: behind books on bookcases? Inside piano benches? Keep looking, before you take any irrevocable action, like buying a new stone.

If you really and truly cannot find it, and (this is the key part), if your mom can afford it, I'd accept the 7K from her. I'm sure her intentions were very good, but if she lost it ... I don't think it's necessarily the kind of thing where you have to have a stiff upper lip.

I would talk to your GF about it: if she sees you're stressed, I'm sure she's worried about it, and who knows what sort of suggestions she might have? Maybe she'll be the one to find the original ring: maybe she'll tell you she's always wanted to get engaged with an eternity band. You never know .... Whatever happens, I hope that you don't put yourself through the wringer too badly. Accidents happen, but at the end of the day, you've found a woman you truly love. It will work out.
