Ok...so my future FI and I are in the market for an E-ring. Problem is, Im getting mixed anwsers on whta type of prong setting to go with for the center stone. We DEFF want to do a 3 stone ring. The ORIGINAL ring that my BF found that he LOVES has the center stone set in a 4 prong Tiffany style head. Now I work in a Kennel 8hrs a day 5 days a week. I sell puppies, clean their cages, do bathes ect. So I have been told BOTH to stay AWAY from the tiffany style prongs AND that that style is BEST for stone protection. My fear is a prong bending or pulling and loosing the stone...can ANYONE who works in the buisness PLEASE give me your professional opinion. Thanks in advance

i''d suggest a 3-stone lucida basket ring which consists of 4 prongs but atleast also gives added protection in having a basket. prong may get loose but atleast won''t pop out as easily.

If you''re going to wear your ring while at work everyday, have you considered bezel settings instead? Sounds like most prong settings are going to face a lot of wear and tear daily in this situation.

Or if you have your heart on a 4 prong just make sure you have good insurance.

Good point. The other option is to wear a plain wedding band to work. Not sure I''d want to wear a ring while working in the kennel just because of the wear and tear on the ring.

If you want to wear it to work, then consider a bezel setting.

bezel or 3/4 bezel
invest in an ultrasonic cleaner
plat setting for sure, some of the chemicals are pretty nasty.
no pave

this is what I did. i used to work as an aquatics director and was around pool/hottub chemicals all the time. I bought a plain band to wear to work so I never had to worry about my ring. then I'd go ahead and get the type setting you really want.

I have a lucida which is a four prong and I work at a vets, however I never wear my ring to work-I''m too protective over it!

I wouldn''t wear my e-ring on my finger at work, I''d put it on a chain around my neck or just wear a band. But, I agree with the other''s suggestions of good insurance, and bezel or trellis settings. My old trellis setting was like a Mac truck.

Thank you all for your replies... I do not care for the bezel at all, so thats out. i DEFF will have insurance on the ring when we get it lol and I DO like the trellis setting.... I dont like the idea of NOT wearing my ring at work. Thats why I wanted something that could be worn all the time. Ive had mixed anwsers from people. One local jeweler told me that a 4 or 6 prong tiffany style head wa a GOOD way to go in order to protect te stone. ::shrugs:: I dunno.

Sapphire, honestly there are risks for everyone. I remember a member here who chipped her diamond on a shopping cart. Accidents happen. I don''t know the details of your work but if you don''t like bezels (which I agree would be the best setting for you) and want to wear it to work (though on a chain is a good suggestion), you''ll just have to be extra careful. Do your coworkers wear engagement rings? There are some beautiful 8 prong settings. Maybe that would give you extra protection. I would avoid any melee of course. Can''t wait to see it. I love sapphires!

I do volunteer work with our Humane Society and when I do I just wear my ering on a chain around my neck. I don''t like leaving it in the house when I am away and it would take too much wear and tear with the kind of work that one does when working with animals.

I would say, get the setting that you like the best but don''t wear your ring on your finger while you are working.

BTW, 6 prongs will protect your stone better than four.

This is ALL my MOMS FAULT lol...a few yrs back I had an engagement ring (things between us didnt turn out as planned ::shrugs

ANYWAY...and it was a 4 prong with NOTHING protecting the stone at all...it was just kinda susspended between the prongs...it was a 1ct Sapphire and i had NO problem with that the few mos I had worn it. And that was 24/7 EVEN at work. BUt my mom is PARANOID that something will happen to it because the MANY MOONS ago when she had her ring, she worked in a grocery store bagging and LOST her stone from her setting....well my mom got engaged at 16 and is now in her mid 50''s so YOU do the math LOL...who knows...MAYBE the stone wasnt set right! I personally DONT see HOW you could lose it UNLESS it wasnt secure. it wasnt being BANGED around or anything. And as far as MY ring will go...Im not concerned with BANGING it really...more like a puppy tooth catching a prong or something a pulling it apart (unlikely im sure) like i said...this is all my MOMMYs fault lol

Since you don''t like bezels, I would recommend getting 6 prongs. This way, if one prong gets damaged there are 5 others keeping your diamond secure. Definitely get platinum prongs also. And insurance.

OK guys...I have decided to atach a few pics of the ring that my BF keeps going back to. MAYBE seeing it will help you tell me if its a bad idea or not.

The weak part of this setting is where the head contacts the shank.
Its held in place by a small post and a little solder with a small contact area.
The entire head can sometimes be pulled off which is why they are likely to be recommending against it.
On the plus side its easy to replace the head if a prong should get damaged.

Something with integrated prongs would be stronger but harder too fix.

Both of wifey2b's erings have this style of head and have held up ok but they might not be best for someone who is dealing will pulling forces a lot.
A leash catching the head just so could pull it off.

This style may be better suited for you.

If you must have prongs, make sure to set the diamond as low as possible!

Thank you VERY much for pointing out how the head is just kinda sitting ontop of the band and not inside it. I Can see how that could possibly be a problem. Just want to clear up one miss conception, I didnt explain my job clearly enough... I do not work in a kennel as in a shelter... there are no walking dogs etc. Its a puppy store. We get in pups at 8wks old, and MOST are smaller dgs and a few Labs etc. So there isnt much of a pulling factor but you brought up a GREAT point about the construction of the head... THANK YOU
