Hi everyone! I wish I found this site before I had my ring made, but here goes! I just upgraded to a 3.5 ct round diamond and had a custom setting made with baguettes around it in kind of an octogon shape. My jeweler showed me a similar ring he had made with a much smaller center diamond. Needless to say it didn't turn out exactly as I expected with my larger stone. It looks pretty from the top view, but the profile is waaayyyy to high and looks really clunky. What should I ask my jeweler to do to fix it? If I have the main diamond lowered to the level of the baguette halo, will it lose lots of sparkle?
The split shank diamonds are cutting my pinky finger, so will likely have them removed and just do a single shank.
What do you guys think?????

I would do several things:

-Have him alter the basket so it caves inward. I don't know the technical term for the undercarriage of your ring but they happen with halos and I'm just not a fan. I pretty much agree with your assessment that it looks bulky and pretty uncomfortable for you to wear.

-I would also leave the diamonds in your ring but have him shave down the cathedral shoulders (where the shank widens to meet the basket). That way you can keep the bling but have it be more comfortable to wear.

-This is just personal preference but I would have him remake the head of your halo and get rid of the airline. I personally love the idea of an RB in a hexagon setting but the airline would really bother me for this particular setting. I prefer it to sit more "snug." But once again that is just personal preference.

I agree with every suggestion Sarah made...please come back and post new photos once the new ring has been completed!

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I think they will all help. Hopefully the jeweler will be receptive to making these changes.

Do you want that much finger coverage? It looks like you have fairly small fingers. To my taste, the center diamond with the baguettes results in a ring that's a bit large overall for an engagement ring, unless your plan is to wear it alone without a wedding band. But my idea of an engagement ring is fairly traditional and you may have something else in mind.

If not I would just ask for my money back and go with someone else. I think ERD could do a lovely version of this ring. I have been very impressed with their vintage halos coming from them lately.

VRB it seems the poster is happy with the ring from the top down. It is the underside that is a problem, which i agree with. I personally love the baguettes in the halo and think the proportions are fine.

VRB I am planning to wear it without a wedding band. We've been married for 15 years, I think everyone knows I'm not engaged :-) I was thinking maybe it would look more feminine rotated so it looked more like a diamond shape than a square on my finger. Like I'm holding it in this picture:

In that case the whole "undercarriage" will have to be re-worked anyway, so you might want to look at different basket designs to see if one of them strikes your fancy. Here's a thread to start with:

One of my favorites is in this thread (posted by Gypsy):

I imagine there are PS'ers who have files of photos of inspiration baskets - unfortunately I'm not one of them. Maybe someone else will step forward with theirs, however! (If all else fails, start a new thread and specifically ask for basket design help.)

You might also consider checking some of the rings offered by vendors to see what sorts of baskets they use for similar styles.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input. Honestly, I'm thinking maybe I should just have the jeweler make me a three stone ring with the two pear shaped side stones(around .6ct each) on each side of the new 3.5 ct center stone. I feel like that would be easier to get right.

Take a look at tweeter's gorgeous ring. Like this but in yellow or rose gold, what do you guys think?

Here is my 3.25 ct I SI1 MRB! The ring is designed by Steven Kirsch with .85 ctw pear side stones.

I just wanted to say, i think a three stone would be a lot more timeless and elegant. I think this one ends of looking a up too masculine.

Thank you so much for your opinion!!! That was exactly my concern!!!!

I agree, a three stone would be just as Blingy and more timeless.

I actually really like the basic concept ... but I think the execution is a little bulkier than ideal. A three-stone is a great alternative, but if you do decide to stay with this design, maybe have it scaled down considerably? Baguettes half the width of those, 45% angle on the halo, stone set flush (with a good cut, this won't affect light return), and, yes, a concave gallery that's set a little closer to the hand. Somebody here just posted a thread on Timeless Designs - lots of good examples in there. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/timeless-designs-by-jacob-bryan-ring-visit.189126/

That, or a three-stone! Which one makes your heart sing?

I agree. Because the metal is contrasting the diamonds, I might suggest less metal between each baguette. It seems like it might be a better idea to start from scratch if your jeweler is open to it. Does he do CAD images? I love the idea, but design needs tweaking to make it more feminine, which is what it seems you are looking for.

Hey everyone, I have a quick update for you all! I decided to have a three stone ring made with the 3.5 ct center stone and the two pear shaped side stones(.96ctw) from my previous e-ring. I will post pics when I get it back. Thanks for all your advice!

I can't wait to see pictures! I love my ring so I hope the style works for you!! :D

fantastic choice! I can't wait to see pics!

I love your ring too! I'm hoping mine turns out as beautiful as yours!!!! Do you wear it with a wedding band?

Hi - I have never been a wedding band gal...my ER settings have always been thicker bands. So I don't plan on it with this ring. Check out posts by Kristydarling. She had a 3.56 ct round with pears sides and she shows wedding band pictures on some of the later posts in the thread...or maybe the 3 stone thread for ideas.

Thanks tweeter, I was leaning towards no wedding band also.
