Hi All --

Want to thank you all again for the insight that you've provided. I've narrowed down the parameters of what I'm looking for, and was hoping to source recommendations.

Round Diamond
Budget: $18K
Carat: Larger would be ideal, but at a minimum, 1.6ct
Color: D - G
Clarity: IF - VS2. SI1 would be considered, but purchasing online, and not necessarily having an eye for inclusions turns me off
Cut: leaving this intentionally blank. I will rely on the forum's opinion here.

The biggest WANT would be a CanadaMark diamond. I've had a tough time with finding these, and it seems like JA has the market locked on CanadaMarks. Again, this would make it the perfect diamond, and I'd be willing to overlook Color / Clarity for this, but understand that may not be possible. The reason for the CanadaMark is a personal preference, and related to where our family is from.

All suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

limiting to the Canada Mark stones does take away a lot of options but here's what i've come up with. I did not see any nice stones in budget over 1.6ct though

I'm mobile today so can't effectively search like when on my laptop. But I will post some links later this evening when I'm home.

A few thoughts:

1. Buying an SI1 or VS2 is completely safe online but I would use a vendor that has inhouse stones and can have their gemologist pull the stone and give a real human analysis to ensure its eye clean.

2. I'm not from Canada but feel that requirement really limits your options. Just my 2 cents but I'd really focus on getting the right diamond first. That means right cut, angles, clarity, color, size and budget. Assuming your two best choices is Canadian and not then maybe that is the tie breaker but I wouldn't lessen tangible qualities for non-tangible ones. If this was more of a concern over conflict free diamonds then I could reassure you the vendors recommended are conflict free but that doesn't seem to be the case. No offense meant, just trying to get you the best stone and the best may come from elsewhere is all.

3. I'd suggest you consider putting cut as your top priority. How much a diamond sparkles will have more impact than minor differences in carat weight, color or clarity (assuming all are indeed eye clean and structurally sound).

4. When considering carat weight, remember weight is determined by multiplying length x width x depth. So a 1.4 carat may not be of discernable size difference of a 1.6 carat stone if the 1.4 has good measurements. Some of that weight difference is lost in the vertical (depth) plane and you will never see that. In the horizontal planes (length and width) it takes about 0.20mm difference for the naked eye to detect a size difference. And then that is minimal and will be detected when comparing side by side.

5. You might put a little weight into the color sensitivity of your girl. From the top down most can't see a difference between D-H. But you can see some slight tint variations in the sides. Minimal differences might be detectable side by side but all will generally face up white and bright and not be very discernable by themselves unless one or both of you are very color sensitive.

6. Your call who you like to work with but I prefer vendors who make their data transparent, as that makes choosing a good diamond easier. Things like ASET, IS, H&A images, AGS or GIA certs, videos, etc. All help confirm the data we read when considering the reported angles.

Hope this gets you started until others can chime in with more.

Both points are completely fair. I should have been more clear with my approach. CanadaMark is definitely a nice-to-have, and not a full requirement. Cut is the #1 priority

Thanks! I'll start taking a look through the suggestions. If there are any more, please don't hesitate to share!

woah, huge difference in price! I mean, it's lower on the color and clarity scale so not surprising that there is a difference. I'd cut and run with that G though for the price.
