Hi all!

So I recently posted a very similar thread trying to decide between 2 diamonds from James Allen. I ended up ordering one of them and I like it quite a lot. However, I am still unsure how I feel about the faint brown characteristic. I have now found another diamond that I think is comparable and need your help deciding.

The original:

www.jamesallen.com/mobile/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.60-carat-k-color-if-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3437165

1.6 ct, K-faint brown, IF, triple X, 1.6 HCA

The new diamond:

1.7 ct, K, SI1, triple X, 1.6 HCA

I like that the new diamond is slightly bigger with a slightly larger spread (~0.1mm). It is fairly deep with a small table, which I am not sure how this will impact he performance. It is also a K but with a yellow modifier. It is SI1 but if you take a look at the diamond plot on the GIA report the top of the diamond is completely clean and the feather and cloud are only visible from the base. It does not have any fluoro while the faint brown has medium.

I have requested an aset of the new diamond but it cannot be done until I purchase it and they receive it in the states. I will attach an asset of the original. The new diamond is currently on hold and about 800 CAD more.

Please let me know your thoughts!

I do like the look of the new diamond but it's very deep and that might effect light return - can't know for sure until you get the IS. I do like the smaller table and crown height which is giving it a really nice profile. If you're hesitating about the brown undertone in your current choice (and I could personally see how it might make the stone look slightly dingy in certain lighting), I definitely would recommend you change it before your window is up! It seems like you're really wavering and you should be 100% happy!!

Thanks ac! I think you're right. I keep second guessing the brown. My fear is that it will appear as a champagne in some lighting. I am going to order the diamond so that JA can complete the IS and send it to me. If its acceptable, I will have them send the diamond to me. In the meantime, I am going to sit on my other diamond until the absolute last minute of the return window or until I see the IS for the new choice.

Anymore input from anyone??

If the color bugs you now, it won't get better. But, will fit yellow be better? It seems to me that you prefer higher colors. Budget then limits your size option...and you want a real bump. Maybe you could look preloved and see if your budget gets you size and higher color. Or, search for an eye clean SI2...

I think the yellow will be okay. I will definitely notice it but worry less that it is noticeable to others. I was mostly worried about the fact that the brown can appear fancy coloured in some lighting, even from the top. I really did not like this, but thought I could ignore it.

Here is the idealscope for the new diamond. I am a little confused by it. It looks fairly similar to the other diamond in terms of the white leakage, however does the fact that the red is more of a vivid red than the other mean the light return is not as good? Or is it simply a difference in idealscope imaging because JA did this idealscope image and someone else did the first?

I would really appreciate your interpretations!

K color, brown undertone, combined with medium blue fluorescence is definitely something that I would avoid! I would suggest to return the first diamond and continue looking for an exchange.
I also would suggest, to look at J color MRB diamond. In my opinion, lower colors are very nice in Old cut diamonds only.

Hi Eva,

Thanks for your response. Does this mean you are not fond of the new diamond either? I have since decided to return the first diamond, but am still considering this new diamond.

I like the cut of the new diamond and I told you that, I am a big fan of smaller tables =)2, but I do not like the SI1 clarity. I would look for VS1+. If you could afford J color, even better!
I suggest J color because of the investment purposes. Based on my diamond experience, in Modern Round Brilliant cut people are still looking mainly up to J color.
