I’ve just bought this new beautiful Opal from @jordyonbass. Specs are
WEIGHT (carats): 1.60
DIMENSION (millimetres): 9.2 x 7.6 x 3.1
BODY COLOUR: N6
BRIGHTNESS: B2-3

I’m undecided how to set it.

Should I go for an east west bezel like in the plainer pictures from Daniel M?

Or should I do an open ring (rather than a bypass) with a 4.5mm diamond, both in bezels, more like the cabochon emerald in these pictures. To keep costs reasonable I might do an MMD? Or would another gemstone contrast nicely

Beautiful opal well done!
im partial to setting it with either a green emerald, blue sapphire even a tanzanite, in yellow gold, rather than with a diamond.

And I like the idea of east west, gold bezel, maybe with melee, alternating colours green and blue at the edges, maybe 6 each side set into the gold ie no claws.

My engagement ring is a sapphire with diamond halo, so I wouldn’t want to do a right hand ring that has a sapphire/ blue stone or a halo. I do like the idea of an emerald.

I’m quite cool skin toned and all my jewellery is white metal, so I’d end up doing it in a white metal as it looks better against me.

I like both ideas, however as there is a lot of blue and green in the stone, I may pair it with something pink red for contrast.

Personal preferences and all that.

DK :))

Pretty opal!
Can you show the opal on the back of your finger, with picture showing your full hand?
That would help me choose an opinion

Good idea but it’s in transit from Australia. When it’s here I definitely will do!

Ok, here are the hand shots. On its own, next to a pink ruby as suggested by @dk168 (it’s a dreary day here so I’ve got a better picture here) and next to a diamond.

I’m torn between moi et toi with yellow gold bezel and silver band and a plain setting (with no diamond) like this one from Daniel M https://www.instagram.com/p/B5tbjwlnUni/?igshid=1lp39vrqbqzat D97B59B5-5FC9-449A-BC05-93B580C5105C.jpeg 081F3A66-743D-42B6-8A54-CEAFCDD1433C.jpeg 852E2AE0-B8F8-49E3-A909-50D12AAA83BA.jpeg F64AFBC4-7892-44E6-8422-199E381AC9B9.jpeg

I think the size and shape of your lovely opal lends itself to either of your inspiration choices wonderfully. So I really don’t have much of an onion either way :)
Maybe this rough hack will help you choose? (Don’t zoom in  )

Simple.
One more gem to set in the design you don’t choose for this opal.

What a lovely opal - and the mockups are wonderful! I had a stronger reaction to the last n/s setting - if the stone were narrower, then I would have voted for e/w. You can’t go wrong either way.

I think the bottom left would work best with your stone. The diamond is a perfect companion that will brighten the ring :)

I am not a fan of open rings. I feel that they are going to catch or snag on something Like a wash cloth or other things . They look modern -and I am old-and I like the look but I would be wary.

I didn’t notice it was open until I read your comment. I have to agree, so I’d say close it and make it symmetrical. Beautiful stone!!!
