I met with my jeweler earlier this week and am close to a decision. I meet with him again Saturday (in 2 days) to make the final call! Here's the details:

Diamond #1: 0.51 carats, SI2, F color
Diamond #2: 0.48 carats, SI2, G color

In terms of cut, both are comparable (very good); in terms of cost, the 2nd is $200 less. I looked at both for some time and honestly could not tell a difference and am thus leaning toward the less expensive #2. My first question is: Is this foolish? Should I pay the extra $200 in exchange for the slightly better color and extra 3/100th of a carat?

Secondly, I must admit that I'd really been hoping for a clarity of SI1. I mentioned this to my jeweler, and he kindly offered to procure a comparable SI1 in time for our appointment on Saturday, so I'll actually have 3 diamonds to choose from. Hypothetically, if Diamond #3 turns out to be 0.48 carats - SI1 - G color, I'm prepared to pay $200 more than Diamond #2. My second question is: Is this reasonable to expect that going from SI2 to SI1 will cost about $200 more?

Any advice regarding one or both of my questions would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do you mean going from SI2 to SI1? It will cost more, but it would be worth it to me. I think G color is fine.

In addition, is there some reason you have not asked him to show you excellent cuts? I really think that would be a good idea rather than choosing from very good ones. I'd ask for GIA excellent graded stones.

There isn''t enough information about the stones especially regarding the cut. There are other things that make a stone desirable other than clarity and color. CUT CUT CUT. There is a lot of information on PS about the cut of a stone. You should do some reading here starting with the KNOWLEDGE tab.

Yes, not enough info to tell you if they are good or not.....If you don''t mind telling us your budget maybe we could find something for you...

Ditto! Cut is so much more important to the beauty of a diamond than color or clarity (assuming you''re not talking about stones loaded with carbon gunk or anything
