Hello Rich,

Very very hard decision.. the FTIR or the UV/VIS.

If your doing most of your work on diamonds I would say to get the UV/VIS.

For colored stones - the FTIR is great for determining enhancements in emeralds, natural vs. synthetic quartz, and making I.D.''s on various colored stones easier by doing so in a mounting if needed.

the SSEF website is www.ssef.ch They give courses on advanced instrumentation twice per year in Basel.
I took the scientific gemmology course in August and they country of origin determination course in October of this year.

Thanks,
RJ
