I extremely agree with those who have pointed out that an 8 ct pear shape diamond is not a timeless choice. And considering the financial loss to sell an HPHT diamond and buy something else, I'd strongly recommend choosing a more classic stone such as an emerald cut, and that is the most classy cut for a huge stone, as well, in my opinion. It might also be easier to sell, other than you'll still lose a lot of money. I'm with all those who said they'd rather have a 4 ct natural, very well cut diamond over a 6-8 ct HPHT. I actually could see a young couple buying the treated stone in order to get a one carat over a half carat. They'd have little to lose down the road. But you'd have a huge amount to lose. She'll obviously see others in her social circle with fabulous rings, and I am just betting she won't love that pear cut forever.

I would not buy a treated stone that has virtually no resale value. You may truly believe that you’ll never want to sell or upgrade the stone, but you never know. Tastes change over time and $100K is a lot to spend on something where you won’t really have the option to sell or change. I used to think there was no cut more beautiful and classic than a round brilliant, but after a year I’m loving emeralds, asschers and antique cuts. I also used to think 3ct was huge, that I would never want anything larger, but less than a year later I’m ready for something in the 5ct+ range. Thankfully my stone is a natural diamond and I have the option to upgrade to a different shape and size. If you had asked me a year ago, I would have truly believed that my current ring would be my forever ring. If I were you, I would take the $100K and buy the largest natural stone you can from a vendor with a great upgrade policy, set it in a beautiful halo, and then down the line upgrade to 8ct.

While I might agree that fancy shapes and pears in particular come in and out of popularity, I disagree that we need to tell OP and his SO what shape to look for and buy, especially when he is already considering a “smaller” 5ct-ish natural pear stone.

While the shape might not be as timeless as a round for example, it has remained a constant on the market since its introduction in the 15th century.

If a pear is what makes OP’s SO’s heart sing, then so be it.

Let’s just stick to a natural, please :P2

All diamonds lose value. The only way a diamond "retains" its value is in a trade-up policy like the one from WF. I will say, and this is my opinion only, that an 8 ct diamond is not going to be more beautiful than a 5 ct diamond - of any shape or provenance. It's just going to be more, and quite possibly too much, particularly as pears face up large for their weight.

(I'm not a treated or lab diamond fan. I like natural objects, so it goes against my grain.)

If I had a $100k budget I would call Wink (HPD) and see what he have coming down the pipeline. The down side risk if you bought from HPD is only 20% of what you paid.

If it were me spending that budget and the goal was a large, impressive ring I'd look for preloved engagement ring from a name brand like Cartier, Tiffany, etc. I'm normally not into those name brand rings but there are a lot out there for resale in great condition. But I'm not the OP or the future wearer!

Another place to look for stones that tend to be priced well if no one has mentioned it is b2cjewels. Mark Broumand has some nice big pear rings, OP perhaps he can work within your budget to meet your specs.

Hi Everyone - Thanks for the suggestions and strong opinions :0) I truly appreciate them all! I've spent the lat 10 days traveling and have had the wonderful opportunity to spend time in each city looking at specific natural diamonds with awe. Still in the range of 5-7 carats. (my screen name is 8 carat dream because I thought it was cute to start) More research is needed and I've found absolutely wild variances in price from store to store and online listing to online listing comparisons. Is this feasible: 100k USD budget. 5-5.5 carats. Pear. VS2. Excellent Polish, Cut, Symmetry. D,E,F color, Zero fluorescence??

JA has 32 options as of a moment ago (if you expand your criteria to 4.9ct+, D-G and None-Faint fluor, on the basis that you might find a bargain) but they start from $125k:
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...VS2,VVS1,IF,FL&CaratFrom=4.9&Flour=None,Faint

How sensitive are you to inclusions? There's a 6.18 G SI1 that might be of interest - the inclusions look dark but small and scattered, so it might be eye-clean to your satisfaction:

TBH, it looks as good as the 5.01 VS2 for a similar price:

If you're open to HPHT Mined stones, are you also open to Man Made Diamonds? If so, this D VS1 pear from AVInc might well hit the mark :)

Mark Broumand was mentioned above, close to what you want:

536ct-pear-shaped-diamond-engagement-ring__2745-1d55080329

Also these come up, although not in clarity/colour range if in your budget. Plus you would have to call for videos etc:

https://www.goodoldgold.com/diamonds/

again a non perfect selection, from B2C as mentioned above:

https://www.b2cjewels.com/diamond-search/pear-shaped-diamonds

also I would look at this vendor:
https://usacerteddiamonds.com/?page_id=1547 (I found some potentials here but I can't link it for some reason)
