Update: I have been in and out of the US and traveling on a 4-month trip. (Why I temporarily left the forum).
I went on a cruise that was almost a month long, so I got to be hypnotized four times for free by someone who does therapeutic and also entertainment. She was excellent.
Essentially, she said that the hypnotic state is the same as deep meditation with the big exception that the mind is active with a planned thread of helpful guided thoughts during a therapeutic session.
For the first time in my life, I have lasting relief from PTSD. Yes, the memories are still there, but the pain is gone as the negative, circular pattern of thoughts surrounding them are gone. And excess pounds are melting away without dieting as I am eating slower and feel full with smaller portions. I memorized the phrases she taught me and do as she suggested - hypnotizing myself in bed right before sleep or upon waking. Some of those phrases sound trite but for me they are very effective. One is, "I am better every day in every way."
I reiterate what I said earlier - For many people, hypnotism can be highly effective for combatting either habits (smoking, overeating, etc) or habitual ways of thinking.
