My brain hurts from thinking about all this. I''ve bought an EGL certified diamond. Should I have gone for a GIA stone? Does it really matter?
Would it be possible to have it re-graded by GIA and if so, will it be more money than it''s worth? How does one go about this (I live in the UK)?

Btw, can anyone look at these stats and tell me what they think?

H VS1 Ideal Cut .85 ct Brilliant: depth 62.4%, table diameter 57.8%, crown height 14.9%, pavillion depth 43.4%. Does that look ok?

Also, I only have a "computer representation" of the EGL cert at the moment (haven''t received diamond or cert yet). Will an EGL cert report on flourescence, polish, symmetry etc as I have no idea about these?

Please help me!

Thanks

Wish I had a witty quote, but I''m tired!

Well, stop fretting all that much, it's a 2.2 on the HCA

It's VERY GOOD - Worth buying if the price is right.

I don't know what you paid, but if you liked it, maybe it is the best choice! Sometimes I realize the more you look into things, you get unhappier, and sometimes there's no way to stop the itch for better or more.

EGL isn't evil, they just tend to grade a bit more lenient and tend to be slightly less market value price for them than GIA. No problem, just a softer grade on color, and clarity. The measurements are the measurements, those don't have leniency.

When you get the stone, take a look at it again. See if you like the color and slarity level, and cut appearance. What did you pay? Maybe you can return it if it's totally bugging you, but I have a feeling this could be a lovely stone. Let us know when you get it!!! Good luck and chin up!

There is a good chance that you made a very good purchase. The numbers don't lie and I bet the stone will sparkle. As an EGL certed stone, it may have been priced a little better (I hope so!)

A certificate doesn't really mean much after you own the stone, in my opinion. Re-selling a diamond later is way difficult, regardless of the certificate.

I don't have my diamond ring yet, but I do have a Sarin report on the stone. It scores a 2.7 on the HCA.

I selected it out of several stones with similar (and better scores) by visual appearance alone.

Side by side, my 2.7 was the prettiest stone I looked at.

MAybe you are just having a touch of buyer's remorse.

It will pass!

Hope it works out for you & you enjoy it!

Buying an EGL certified diamond vs. a GIA certified diamond is a common dilemma to have. It has been my experience that if you send the same EGL stone to GIA you might receive a stricter(lower) grade in either color or clarity. It is important to keep in mind that the grade is just an educated opinion and not an exact fact. I've seen two diamonds recently that were graded F color by the same lab that were obviously different in color by quite a bit. These were large diamonds (over eight carats each). Both certificates read well and my advice to the client was to obviously go with the whiter one. The morale of the story is the paper tell a good portion of the story but not all of it. The best way to buy a diamond is to educate youself with the 4C's and all the proportions then look at the diamond side by side next to a diamond of the same grade to judge the color and clarity yourself. Trust your eyes!

Er, not sure if my second message got through, so I'm trying again!

Thanks so much for all the helpful advice.

I paid $3102 for it. I was worried that it would really be an I coloured stone, and, as I'm getting it set in yellow gold, I was concerned it might look a bit off white.

Wish I'd used Whiteflash! The stones you showed me are better (and perhaps a safer bet in terms of colour) and there's no major difference in price! I used this company called Diamonds USA and they seem ok.

I'll let you know when the stone arrives! Fingers crossed! I'll have to do some comparing, I think.

I'm much more cheerful today - thanks!
